    Cam Suggestions?

    Hello everyone,

    This may have been answered in a previous thread but I've been reading all over about different cams. But as of now I have a pretty much stock '98 A4 Z with just the SLP catback. Ive heard that it is probably best to do full exhuast first but thats out of my current budget. What I can do now is get an LS6 intake and cam and corresponding cam parts (i.e. valve springs, pushrods, timing chain, oil pump). My question is do you guys know of a good cam that results in more torque? This car is my DD but im leaning more towards an aggressive cam. And also, do more aggressive cams wear out the engine quicker than a milder cam?

    Thanks!

    im not really sure about it giving more TQ or HP, but i love the MS3, my buddy has one in his '00 Z28 and he says its definitely worth it. you do know that you can get a set of headers and an ORY for cheaper than the all of that you listed above. from "speedinc.com" i hot my headers and ORY for about $450

    If you don't have the exhaust yet save until you can. I don't think you are going to find it any cheaper to do an intake and cam over a full exhaust.

    Just to give you a quick idea

    LS6 intake = ~300 (used)
    cam = 400
    springs = 255

    while you are there you would want to do and LS2 timing chain and a LS6 ported oil pump (another 200-300ish). You can also get pushrods (I am still using the stockers) which are about another 100.
    You will probally want a stall (never priced them out for these cars), and you will want a tune as well (about 400 depends on each shop or person).

    The total cost of a cam with these numbers is about 1500.

    That being said I have a cam by Vengeance in my car and love it. It is the VX3 which is 226/228 .585/.588.

    You really need the exhaust though to make full use of the engines power. Otherwise you will just be choking up all the motors potential.

    If you look at doing exhaust these were the prices I paid.

    Kooks long tubes 750 (easily go with pacesetters for 400 maybe even less).

    Custom true dual exhaust with 2 dynomax 18' bullets 500.

    Total cost with this is only 1250 and you won't need a tune as much, though I gained 21 RWHP from the tune alone when I put the exhaust on (over stock tune).

    IF you don't have the budget for headers you don't have it for the cam.

    cam 350
    springs 255
    pushrods 100

    now for the stuff you really should add when doing a cam swap.

    ported LS6 oil pump 140
    LS2 timing chain 40

    that is about 900 bucks in parts.

    If you are not going to install it yourself than that is an extra 650
    and a tune is 400

    all in all you are looking at close to $2000

    Yes exactly, my budget is going to be $2000. So i was thinking, LS6 manifold, cam, oil pump, and tune. Then later on i'd do exhaust and maybe get it tuned again. I know thats not the greatest idea, but i want to get a cam so badly just for the sound haha. I've been thinking about the MS3 cam, who sells that cam?

    You should probably do the exhaust first so you dont have to spend money on a tune twice. Just my $.02.

    Cam

    The best way to select a cam is call a cam grinder with your cars exact mods and have it custom ground to the cars specs then their is no quess work if the cam is going to work, call Patrick G or Cam Motions.

    Call Cam Motion and get a custom ground cam to YOUR specs and needs for about the same price.

    This way you are sure to get the most/best bang for your buck.

    Pretty lame reason to get a cam imo but fwiw long tubes and ory will give more sound than a cam alone on stock manifolds and cats.

    Well I like the choppy idle too, but more to picking a cam than that. A hot cam will give you the choppy idle.
