A tick could also be a small exhaust leak or a needle bearing on a rocker arm.

They all tick, but sometimes louder that normal ticks should be addressed! With 178K miles, one tick became too loud one day, so I decided to pull a valve cover and inspect. The holes where the rods come up through the head had been perfect circles, now had ovals due to the rods rubbing up against the aluminum. I pulled one pushrod out and saw that it had a Mcdonalds arch to it. So I decided to pull another, and another with the same results. At that point I decided to replace them all. Some where so close to breaking that it is a wonder to me how the car ran at all.

The best way is to put the car in N and turn it off then wait till its almost start turning then start it again if its a bent rad nothing will happen but if its a pressure plate it will snap it, its like $40 to replace the plate

Pull em out and look at them. That's really the only way. If you have headers I wouldn't worry too much about the ticking, most do it.
