Another Cam Question
I have a 98 I want to put in a cam to do 2 things; make a little more power, and then to get a little better sound from ther car at idle. i really dont want to get into a stall convertor. I do plan on getting a tune done at EPP, close to my home here in Indiana. any sugestions?

You will pick up more from the stall than you will with just the cam.
02 Camaro
PRC Stg 2.5 5.3's, Futral F14, PP Typhoon intake, True duals, Performabuilt tranny, & 3500 convertor, HSW plate kit.
*Old Time* 10.90@ 125mph

the stall is planned, but i am doing this for more of the sound than performance. maybe i do need to do a stall instead. it is just a lot more for the stall than a cam.

You'll want that converter before a camshaft. Any decent camshaft with some overlap will drive terrible with the stock converter, push through the brakes, and struggle to idle in gear. In extreme cases you'll end up setting the idle higher in park just so it will idle in gear, then you have to deal with a huge RPM drop from park to drive and a nice neck snapping lung from the car.
Then of course there is the car feeling sluggish down low until the rpm's get to a happy spot.
The converter is more money, but you'll be alot happier doing that first.

I'd personally keep it mild for a daily driver but it would help if you picked a camshaft you want to go with first and that will determine the stall you need. Also the weight of the car and the gear you run will have an affect. Good to know where you want to be with the car before buying.
I knew the camshaft ahead of time for mine, I knew I wanted to keep the 3.23 gears, and the car was 3,820 lbs. with me in it so I called around a couple of different converter companies to recommend something that will work in that range.
I wound up with a 3,400 converter and 2.1 STR and it seems to work nicely. This is also a car that is 99% street driven and I find it to be just fine.

ebay man ebay.
pickup my TCI 3,000 stall for $140 shipped, camshaft = 220/224 .570/ .580 112lsa for $117 shipped, and a friend gave me a set of comp 918 springs.
the stall sells new for over $500, and I did my whole setup for less than the price of the stall.
the cam is listed on ebay as = HR284 grind (fresh copy) with your choice of 112,114,or 116lsa.
trust me do the stall first, or atleast at the same time

I agree with all on the converter ...... and don't think the cost is any more!
prob. gonna be around 500.00 for a converter or cam and springs + your car is 98
so you might wanna do timing chain & oil pump while it's apart! then you'll need a tune
(oh and my suggestion would be THUNDER RACEING TR224 cam on a 112 lsa w/ 32-3400 stall ) this is a nice DD set up and cam sounds pretty nasty on 112 lsa!!
