    Am I F'd??

This has to do with my 98 Chevy truck not the Camaro. About a month ago my truck started using oil and shortly after developed a misfire. Well I checked the spark plugs and I found out that engine is fouling the No. 3 spark plug. I replaced the plug and the misfire is gone. However, the oil consumption continued. Then the miss came back, so I replaced the plug again. I now carry extra spark plugs with me, as I have gone through 3 plugs in a month. Obviously there is something wrong...so I take the plugs to a mechanic and he says that its odd that its only doing that to one cylinder. He says that it sounds like a piston ring problem...WTF...the truck only has 95,000 on the odo. I really didn't expect to have to tear down the motor before 100,000. Any ideas on what the problem could be??

Imho. A valve seal is taking a shit on you.. I do valve seals first before tearing it the whole way down.. Seals are cheap..

Do leakdown test on that cylinder. That will tell you where the problem is before throwing seals at it......

I'd do a leakdown on ALL of them, actually!

    Bummer.

Guys, why would you do a leakdown on cylinders that are not having a problem????

He is just trying to find out what is going on with this particular cylinder........

I've been on the site, and around enough motors in my time to know RARELY is it ever rings.. Usually when/if oil can travel down the valve stems it gets on the plug/s. Causeing a misfire/fouling, and as it burns blue smoke out the pipes. Blowby @ the ring level is usually far worse than just a misfire condition and burning some oil.... Ring blowby will in generally cause a dead cyl, not just missfire..

When did I say rings..... A compression test can give you a good indication of ring condition.....

A LEAKDOWN TEST is TOTALLY different and can isolate whether the problem exists in the bottom end or the valvetrain and whether it is exhast or intake related within the valvetrain.......

How did rings get in here from leftfield

Also in the OP he mentioned being told it sounded like an issue with his rings. Which is not likely..

Well like you guys said I believe it is not the rings but either a valve stem or valve seal issue...now what?

Hmm, well bro if it is valve seals, those are relatively easy to change without pulling heads..If it a stem/guide issue you'll be needing to pull your heads for a valve job..

How do I determine if its the seals or a valve guide issue without pulling the head?
