Quickest way to get my Firebird going again..

Ok here's the story I have a 95' Firebird that I transformed body wise to become a 98-02 Trans Am. Anyways it's a 3.4 5-speed, and the engine blew up. I've slowly been parting out the various "v6" stuff since I planned on down the road putting in a V8 (different not a ls1 but better like ls2 or something).

Well I'm sick of it just sitting in the garage, and being a college student without much funds means I'm not going to be putting in an ls2 or anything more expensive than that anytime soon.

So what is the cheapest V8 I could throw in just to get the car going again? I'm thinking the 350 or even sadly the 305 variety since they are so cheap on craigslist and aftermarket is cheap too. Also I'm guessing that carbing it would be a lot cheaper than dealing with all the ecm stuff right? Is it possible to bolt up my 5-speed to a 305/350 V8? Thanks

A v8 swap of any kind swapped into a v6 car will still cost a bundle. Suspention won't hold a v8.. Wire harness has no v8 supported features. Ecm can't be used. Motor mounts can't be used, crossmember can't be used..etc,etc... The tranny bolting to a v8 will be the least of troubles. Your best bet is to rebuild or replace the 3.4L....

I guess I'll just be patient and slowly "build" my own V8 from the ground up as I don't want to throw in another 3.4. Thx for the input man.

True...but at the end of the day I'll have built my own custom "Trans Am" from scratch to the way I want and better than stock and the best part RIDICULOUSLY cheaper than buying one.

Your cheapest route, find a totaled LS1 TA or Firebird.

You'll need the entire wireing harness & ECM, K-Member, tranny mount, fuel system, at least the front struts/suspension, gauge cluster... oh my it isn't easy.

I have a good friend who took a 99 V-6 hard top Firebird, then used a donner/smashed 02 TA for everything but the motor... it got a 5.3L... it still needs some finishing work, but the woman it was intended for left and he doesn't feel like finishing it... I want it!

I know you'd rather have a v8.. But I would'nt be the v6 Doc if I did'nt ask, why not build the v6? You could built a very powerfull v6 with the money you'd spend in the v8 conversion.. There are many routes that can be taken to build a 60* v6 that would put you @ or above v8 power.. Even building a 90* 3800 would be cheaper than converting.. There's also nothing wrong with your plan for a v8 either tho.. Just my .02...
