I'm screwed
So I was on the car pretty hard this week going 98-115mph. Well I cranked it yesterday about to take it to the car show and it started pinging every time I revved it. I don't know if it's a push rod or just a rod or timing chain. It cranked but kinda stalled a bit and when I tried to accelerate up a shallow hill it took longer than usual to get up and go like normal. I just topped 70k so I'm not sure what I should do. I'm not driving it at all cause I don't know exactly what it is and if driving it will harm it more. HELP!!!

Is the SES light on? We don't usually have to worry about push rods on our motors..
Could be a knock sensor issue.. What kind of sealer did you use when you put your intake mani back on?
Was there any extra bolts left over? lol
If any of the "extra" bolts are 10mm, you get to take the intake back off again..
I heard you talking about headers and cams a while back..
Was that work ever done, and if so, was it tunned by a pro?
Could be a weak coil.. Mine would "ping" only @ WOT when the 2-5 coil shit the bed with no SES light..
Check of VAC leaks @ the MAP and @ the "T" on the passenger firewall..
If you're running headers make sure a plug wire did'nt droop down over them.
Was it smoking while climbing the hill, If so what color did it appear to be..?
Timing chains are'nt usually a problem for us..
Fuel pump maybe crapping out too.. You're near the mileage I had when mine died.. Seems to be an issue ~ 70-90k for us..Last edited by Smittro; 04-18-2011 at 07:33 AM. Reason: added fuel pump as possible cause

Make sure the VAC line to the rail ballast has'nt come loose, or broken/melted..

Just a thought. Symptoms kinda sounded similar to clogged cats, plus she was running it fairly hard before. Hopefully it's something simple.

UPDATE!!! So it was a rod, the mechanic showed it to me. It was bent and had several pieces in the block so I was very lucky it didn't shoot through the block. I'm having a new reman Jasper engine put in this week and headers installed. I can't do a cam because it would void the warranty but at least I get a 3yr/100,000 mile warranty! Can't really argue with that. I was tempted to drop an LS1 in but I've done one before and am not willing to nor have the money for it and premium gas can kiss my @ss! lol.

The rod is missing 2 inches and the rest we found in the block. It cracked the cylinder heads!

I honestly have no idea. When I first got the car during the winter it made a pinging noise but went away after I put full synthetic in it. The mechanic said it was a prolonged issue and that me gunning it last week was the last straw. I bought it from a teenager so I'm NEVER doing that again. How fast can I go till I get the new engine broken in? I know I have to go slow till I reach 1k miles but does it matter if I go like 75?

It's an all iron engine,, start it up let it achieve operation temp, check for leaks and drive it..
Just don't hammer on it and burn tires till you get @ least 500 miles on it or so..
Moderate repeated accelleration will help break it in..
Like I said just don't beat on it right away..
It may smoke a little here and there (blue oil smoke) till the rings seat in the bores aswell..
Sometimes new motors do that but it goes away pretty quickly as the engine breaks in..Last edited by Smittro; 04-22-2011 at 10:36 PM.
