I'd go with the 17x9.5's all around as they should be lighter. Also, since you're interested in autocross and road racing, 275/40-17 RR slicks are widely available from several manufacturers and generally a lot cheaper. If you do go with the same size all around and run a dry pavement non-directional tread pattern slick you can fully rotate F-R and side to side keeping wear even which will keep them lasting longer.

Pewter- 99 Camaro SS
rims for autocrossing
If you go with staggered sizes you will not be able to rotate you race rubber tires which will shorten their life. To be able to get 11 inch wide rims in the rear you will need to have an adjustable panhard bar to get the rear end centered exactally. Then there is a bump on the inner fender you will have to flatten with a hammer. Besure your back seat is up or you may not be able to get it back in position after flattening the bump. Then do a test fit. Most people I have talked to have had to roll the inner fender lip to prevent rubbing on the tires. There is a tool for this (I think it is made by Eastwood and cost several hundred $) which will insure you will not crack the paint. I believe you can find them for rent on ebay for like $60 per week. Others have used a small body hammer and finesse and have been able to do it without cracking the paint. I've heard that heating up the lip with a heat gun or powerful hair drier helps make the paint more flexable and less likely to crack.

I have the 275/40/17s all the way around on C5 Z06 wheels and it fits awesome. Its lowered like 2 inches and it never rubs or anything.

I had the same size wheels and tires on my last late great camaro, and my car was lowered amd inch as well, I am looking into is whitch wheels size I want, from what I gathered the stock rear can fit an 10.5in wide easy, and aslo I plan On going full umi roto jointed supsn parts, that help with clearance issues in the rear(panhard bars LCAs etc), Also I want to put a baer 14" brake kit, I need an 18"rim to fit such rotors, so 18x9.5 is going in the front now, in the rear I want to put an 18x10.5 c5z06 with an 295/35/18 ps2 tires, the way i figured it wider tires in the back=more tracion and better handeling, again I am going for autocrossing and road racing here, and as far as cost goes I rather have a better handleing setup, switching the rear tires to the front and buying new tires(ex:if rims with is the same)! with umi and the wider back tires my ss should dance better than john travolta!!

If you're serious about autocrossing/roadracing, most 275/40-17 R compound slicks will stick A LOT better than your 18" ps2's. Instead of the 14" Baer fronts, go with the C5 front conversion that will fit 17's, use a racing compound pad, get 17X9.5's all around with 275/40-17 racing slicks that you can rotate. You'll end up saving a lot of money, which will let you race A LOT more, and make you a much better driver that a bigger set of tires ever will.

so your saying that if two same hp and supen setup cars, and one with 17x9.5 and the other 18x.10.5 both with compund slicks that the guy with the 17''s will out performe the guy with the 18's, and my car is going to be streetdriven that why I go with the ps2 tires no matter whitch rime size i go with, I was going to call UMI and see what they say after all I plan on buyin there suspenion parts, also if i am going with an 17'' rim I just go with 13'' baer brakes more money than the C5 but they will have a hell lot more stoping power!!!

The better driver will win. Spend less money, race more, be a better driver. TireRack lists only BFG g-Force T/A drag radials in 295/35-18 for track/competition, no R compound autocross/rr slicks at all. They list 11 different dry or wet RR slicks listed from 4 different manufacturers in 275/40-17.
As far as brakes go, C5 conversion fronts give you a crapload of options for rotors and pads giving you 95% of the stopping power of the Baers, while costing a third as much.
Anyway, do what you want to do. It's your car.

ok, your not getting my question, if two same skilled drivers with the same cars but one has 17x9.5 and the other 18x10.5 both same hp and suspen, hell if you want have it be the same driver if you will, whitch car will out performe the other, that what I am trying to figure out???? heres a thought if I want to keep the same size tires, what if I went with an 18x9.5 all the way around that way I can get my 14'' brakes!! now new question with will handle better if I went with the same size tires 17 or 18x.9.5??? and by the way thanks for all your input bro!

Id run the 275s all around in 17"
you could rotate like said and the added rubber will help out on the track

I was thinking 18' so I can fit an 14'' rotor! also I was thinking the add rubber like an a 295 whould give me better tracion=better handleing?? what did you mean that "the added rubber will help out on the track"?? I have 275/40/17 ss rims all the way around right now? why do you say go with an 17" rim vs an 18"???

The boggest advantage would be more sidewall. If you plan on running a big brake kit then get the 18s but a good autox tire for 18s is gonna cost a good amount more.

ok, what I am asking is cost put aside just best hanleing in mind whitch set up do I want to go with:
1) 275/40/17 all the way around with an 13" brake
2) 275/40/18 all the way around with an 14" brake
3) 275/40/18 in the front 295/35/18 in the back, with an 14"brake
4) 275/40/17 in the front 295/35/17 in the back with an 13" brake
whitch of these setups will handle better for road race and autocross???
I plan on going full umi roto jointed bumber to bumber no bush deflection!!! Not try to do an BHC mod to fit a 11" rear tire just incase someone wanted to post that on!

If cost is no option then id tell you to go with option 3. More rubber on the ground and more stopping power

If you can find R compound road race slick in that size more power to you. But a street tire in that size isn't going to come close to the grip of a R compound slick in 275/40-17 and it won't last on the track. I probably don't need to say it, but DO NOT run a drag radial out back while auto-xing or rr-ing.
