Best shocks for a smoother ride?

Ok, I hate to say this but handling is my last priority. I drive mostly straight roads, I really have no place to open her up in the curves. I'll never lower the car, the roads here are too bad, I scrape if I'm not carefull as it is.

That said, what's a good set of shocks that will give me the best possible ride? I'm sick of the clunking and crashing from the rear, it feels like every bump causes the rear to bottom. There's lot of frost heaves here, they're like small speedbunps that go all the way across the road. I can't help but hit those, and the car handles them terribly, it feels like the rear runs out of travel and bottoms out.

Like I said, ride quality is my top priority, the car is basically a cruiser that might see some strip duty, but that's it.

Anyone have a suggestion a a good shock that doesn't cost a fortune?

Oh, and 71k on stock shocks and springs, btw.

I had the same problem with my 88GTA, and I solved the problem with Gabriel air shocks. I don't really want to go that route this time though.

    Would air bags help?

I would like to know this aslo..I'm a cheap ass when it comes to this as well, and I just want the cheapest shocks that will give me the same ride as stock. I've done minimal research, and I just can't seem to find anything for less than like 100 per shock! I almost lose control every time I hit a bump lol, so I kinda need to get it done soon, and fairly cheaply. Thanks!

Haha, damn, I was hoping you had an answer for me!!

I actually MIGHT give air shocks a try. They're cheap enough, anyway.

They worked good on my GTA, although the GTA's tend to sit low in the rear...I was able to put 7psi in the shocks to level it out and prevent bottoming. That's all it took, 7-10psi, IIRC.

I don't want to add a rake to the Formy though, I want it to sit level.

Advance auto parts has KYB cheapo shocks for $25 a piece for the rear, but the fronts are a little more, and they're not KYB...like $50 a piece for the front.

Thanks for the info. If it'll cure the clunking, I'll give the KYB's a shot.

I'm told a symptom of the shocks going out is clunking, which mine has been doing lately.

Amen to that brotha!!! Mine is starting to clunk too, and like you said earlier, every little bump you hit, it feels like the rear runs out of travel. I'm gonna order them tonight or tomorrow, and maybe wait for the fronts.

Cool man, let me know how they work for you.

And same thing here, the front seems okay, it's just the rear that kills me.

From what I have heard, Koni struts are by far the best comfort and handling.

Yes these are the best (Factory spec) dampers for our cars.

Not including the 'special race style' shocks of course...

if memory is right, it was Sam Strano that said that, a reseller of Bilstein and suspension guru.
