    why does it grind?

i have a 96 z28 with 87,XXX miles on it and everytime i put it in gear it grinds. its stock except from a new clutch i recently had to install.. everything is fine like gears go in but just with a grind..

will installing a BM short shifter just eliminate the prob?

    or what can be done?

mine did that. check the level of trans fluid ... if it's low, it'll grind into gear

Swapping a shifter will not help this. Did you bleed the hydraulics properly?

Grinding can mean the clutch isn't disengaging all the way.

good way to check if the clutch is disengaging properly is to put the car on level pavement in first gear with the clutch pedal pushed down. give it a rev, about 5k should do. if the car moves you got problems.

Does it grind going into all gears or just a particular gear? If just one specific gear, it could also be your synchro key.

    first gear grind

I have a 99 z28 6sp with 150,000 miles. Bought it back in may. Car is grinding only in first gear when car is cold. After that it does not grind at all. Any thoughts of what could it be? Previous owner installed new clutch and master cylinder and slave cylinder before i bought it.

Usually that means the input shaft is still engaged to the the engine and not free wheeling like it should with the clutch pedal down. The little sychro can't overpower the engine to match the speeds of the gear to the input shaft and it'll grind.
So why isn't the input shaft free wheeling? Usually the crappy hydraulics are to blame. Sometimes the pilot bearing is bad and it kinda grabs the input shaft. Also if the front input shaft bearing has some wear wobble, that could also cause the pilot to wear out. and sometimes the clutch itself messed up. But a good place to start is with fresh hydraulic fluid in the clutch hydraulics and fresh fluid in the transmission. I recommend DOT4 brake fluid for the hydraulics and a good quality automatic transmission fluid (not synthetic though) for the transmission.
