where did 5th, 6th, and reverse go?

The car is a 450rwhp '98 z28. Last night, I was passing my cousin down an open road, and decide to really crack down on it, and shifted from 3rd to 4th, then shifted into 5th, when i let out on the clutch i heard a loud CLANK CLANK CLUNK, then yanked it into neutral as fast as i could... then i pulled over, pulled back out, and everything is fine until i went to shift into 5th...there is no 5th...but what I dont understand is that there is no 6th or reverse either.... i dont know too much about transmissions, anyone have any idea whats going on?

Can you put the lever in each gear position or is it being blocked out from 5, 6 and R?

Those three gears are located in the same area in the extension housing. They're on their own shift rail as well. Maybe a roll pin on the rail broke. Regardless, I think it's going to require you to take it out and open it up.

You probably stripped out the main shaft and the upper 5/6 assembly .

Man! There seems to be a lot of that going around lately!

i can put it in the gear no problem. I can put it in reverse, let out of the clutch, and its like its in neutral. nothing happens. same with 5th and 6th.

Like I said , sounds like you stripped the main shaft and upper 5/6 gears to me . You will find out once its apart for sure .

I would say its more likely that the lugs on the cluster gear extension are sheared off. Stripping the spline under the 5th/6th driven gear (mainshaft member) would take out the 5th and 6th but would not affect reverse.

The transmission mechanics around here are leaning towards it being a shift fork, any chance of that being the case?

It would have to be two forks then, since reverse has its own.

I think 30thbird got it right.

No I think its what 30thbird said , it ripped the lugs off the back of the cluster gear . That would explain losing all three gears . The loss of only 5/6 would be the mainshaft issue . I was having a brain fart when I posted that .

At lot of it is going to depend on the extent of the damage. At the very least, you need to remove the transmission and open it up. Anything beyond that is pure speculation at this point.

You have to pull it all the way apart and change the broken parts . Expect to spend some cash because the T56 parts are not cheap ........
