2.56 gears will run you almost 200 top speed, 2.73 about 180 top speed. I hope your suspension and breaks are built up before you attempt it. Good tires are a must also

I'm not worried about getting a higher top speed i thought different gears ment higher RPM, quicker acceleration, killin them off the line and lower top speed?
I wouldnt mind a higher top speed though but would 2.56 slow me down?
Whats the difference between 2.56 - 4.10 and whatever gears you can buy in between?

Navy Blue Metallic- 2000 Camaro SS
I have put a set of 4.10 in my M6 SS and it took about 15 mph off my top end but out of the hole it's like someone kicked you right in the @$$. ilost about 4 Miles Per Gallon in fuel ecpnomy which i still get 25 on the e-way, you deffinetly get to speed alot quicker, i've heard that changing to a 3.73 is almost a waste with a 6 -speed

Quicksilver Metallic- 2005 Pontiac GTO
So has anyone here put a set of 4.30s or 4.56s in their Bird/Camaro? If 4.10s are as good as they say, what would that be like????

What happens to my top end with 4.10 on a slightly modified SS. I know the top end is about 160 with a stock M6 and it occurs in 5 th gear. Althought I am not sure if that is at redline or not?????6th gear dies early, not enough torque. So if I get 4.10 does that move the top end to 6th ??
Any way to calculate that??

yeah f-body.org has a calc on there that i use...but like i said 410 gears would pull to 223@6000 rpms in 6th gear...if your making peak hp at say 5500 like a near stock ls1 then no it wouldnt move it to 6th gear because you'd probably be at 200mph in the meat of your powerband which i dont think a stockish fbody could reach...on a heavily modded one then yes 4.10's might be best for top speed. There are alot of guys with 4.56's but they are generally really into racing...few people do it on stock cars not because it wouldnt work but people with stock ls1's usually arent into racing so most wouldnt even know what a ring or pinion gear is. Personally im going to be throwing in a 9in with 4.30 gears as one of my first mods in my v6 car...yes a bit overkill but i plan on a motor swap in the future with an m6 so in the end it should be a good choice...also the ford gears are uber cheap so if its not what i need I can change them later on the cheap.

that doesnt make sense though...mh would be directly related to driveshaft speed...if your in 5th gear at 3000 rpms & turning 10000 rpms and 180mph or in 6th gear turning 2500 rpms & doing that same 180 wouldnt your driveshaft be spinning at the same rate?

Tanx for the info................I am gonna check out that calculator.
All this talk about top speed is making me want to go for a ride.
I still love my SS after 5 years.................
I am planning on going to Beaver Run, Pa next year for a day at the track with my SS. And then to the "top speed" track down south ( Carolinas, I think it is? ) Gotta try both before I get to old...............LOL
Have fun.................

6th top end!!!!
I read in a mag once that in corvette w/a man 6 it takes at least 500rwhp to pull 6th to 200mph and over come the wind. and at top end like that drive shaft speed and balance is critical. The best way to increase you top end is leave it in 5th , dont go crazy with gear combos! nobody ever once mentioned the right way to do this feat. HEADS,CAM,INTAKE,TUNE, MAKE THE CAR PULL MORE RPMS. 1000 more rpms and an extra 100hp or more is more fun althe way around.plus what fun is top end if it takes you 3 countys to get there?
at 7000rpm the car should be running 180-185 in 5th!
ps ihave been 200 in a formula TRUUUUUST ME it aint built for it,the window suck out about 4in and you think the car is coming apart and it will shut down.Last edited by navy ss; 12-16-2005 at 07:41 AM.
