Transmission locked in 4th gear.
This is the second time this has happened to me. On the freeway I downshift to 4th and give it some gas to pass someone and the transmission locks up in 4th gear. Pushing in the clutch and trying to shift gears is useless as I can't physically move the shifter. The last time this happened I took apart the center console and removed the shifter. After I reseated the shifter I was able to shift normally. However this time the transmission is still locked in 4th gear. Any suggestions as to what the problem can be? btw, this is an 02 SS, with a 6 speed manual with about 36k on the clock.

Holy digging up old & moldy lazy guy threads!!!
Sticking in 4th is well documented. A teardown is required & a iron 3/4 fork should be part of the rebuild.

Problem ended up being 2 OEM syncro keys broke and locked her up in 4th gear.
That was the only damage to the tranny but full rebuild, new clutch, time and money

I too had this problem. Its what happens when you drive it hard. My forks were fine. My 3-4 Synchro was in a thousand pieces tho, lol. Had it all replaced with forged steel. NO MORE PROBLEMS.

Like some have said, 3-4 synchros are broken if your car gets stuck in 4th. I had this same exact thing happen to me with only 12k on the ticker.
Had my T56 built while I had it pulled, along with a new clutch.
I was informed that the synchros are stamped hollow metal, and often break during power shifting. RPM also informed me that the next most common mishap with the T56 is the 3-4 OEM fork bending.

no prob i just rebuilt mine and im getting ready to take it down again due to reverse syncro strut problems
