tranny help

i have only owned my car for 9 months. what kind of tranny comes stock in the 2000 trans am????? and i wanna upgrade the tranny what tranny would you recomend?

If you have a manual trans then its a T56. This trans is pretty strong and good. There are a few upgrades you can make to the trans if you need something to handle mega horsepower. Otherwise most people keep the trans stock or mostly stock until 450 ft*lbs or more.

The most common upgrades are the 3-4 shift fork and solid synchro keys.

Stock 3-4 shift fork is aluminum and can easily bend. Aftermarket forks are steel.

Stock synchro keys are stamped and hollow. Aftermarket keys are solid.

You can also do things like bronze fork pads, new sliders/hubs, an upgraded input shaft, and cryogenic tempering.

The biggest thing people do with a manual is get an aftermarket shifter that has solid stops to protect yourself from over-shifting and damaging things.

I broke my synchro keys with STOCK power with only 12K miles on my car. I was one of the unlikely ones I guess
