stock tranny mount movement

How much movement should the stock rubber tranny mount allow??

The stick vibrates a little at idle as usual, and under acceleration it moves upward about 1/2 an inch, maybe a little more.

I was thinking about going to poly mounts, but not sure if it's really necessary. Only mods are Magnaflow catback, SLP lid and K&N filter, and I don't have any other plans for it for awhile.

Normal. The stock rubber mount has a lot of flex to it. If you put a poly in it everything will feel tighter, and as a trade off youll hear more noise from the tranmission.

when a mount goes bad, does the tranny usually hit the tunnel under acceleration? my stick seems to move alot, but i don't hear the usual thud from the tranny moving. i guess i might just end up taking a look under the car. is it easy to spot a busted mount?

Yes if when you shift you hear the transmission banging then it is torn. They are easy to spot once you get the mount out. Install university has a good write up for changing the tranny mount. The first time i changed mine out with a poly mount i returned it within a couple days, and used my 25 bucks towards another stock mount. Couldn't stand the noise. The stock mount cost me just under 90 bucks.
