i don't[ have one myself... but every one i asked told me PRO 5.0 is the best... from what i've heard it is a better "click" in to gear and a smoother throw than the bmr ripper...

I might be wrong, but didn't SS's come with the Hurst?

I've had Hurst shifters in both my current 2000 SS, and also had one years ago in an 1987 Mustang LX 5.0.
I've been real happy with both, they have nice, quick, throws in the shifts. The Hurst shifters were a hell of alot better than what I had in a '97 Cavalier Z24 (whatever crappy shifter that car came with)!
Hurst has been around forever, so I'm not sure why your friend tells you to stay away from the brand. I dunno, I'm sure there's some fancier shifter out their on the market, but you have to ask is it really worth the extra cash? Not sure if your car has it or not, but one thing I WOULD invest in is a skip-shift eliminator (you can get for about $35), that cancels out that annoying 1st to 4th skip shift that GM stupidly put in most all of their LS1 6-speeds.

Hurst is great. I have moved to the short stick and cut that down another inch and a half. My shifts range about 4 to 5 inches. Its nice.

Nothing wrong with hanging on to the Hurst though.

The hurst that came one the car is different, than the aftermarket one. The aftermarket is made from billet aluminum. This is the one im getting when i have the money, it looks like an old school muscle car shifter

It usually involves taking the console out, but don't sweat it, it's not too hard. (about 30-45minutes) that depends on mechanical experience.

That's all I have done with mine and I love it so far. I'm sure I'd be happy with the Pro 5.0 shifter as I believe it has the set screws to prevent you from overshifting and possibly affecting the internals of the tranny.

Those set screws are nice, when your banging the gears you dont have to worry about breaking it.
