Reverse Inhibit
I've heard that it's more likely an electrical short causes problems with the reverse inhibit function than a bad solenoid. Anyone know where to start looking for those electrical problems? Also, has anyone had the solenoid go bad?

Its most likely a problem with the reverse lockout solonoid, but it can also be the speedometer sensor, are you having any problems with your speedometer? the 2 of them work in conjunction with each other. first try this, in your fuse panel there is a fuse for the reverse lockout, pull it out then put it back in. ive seen some of the cars where the reverse lockout needed to be reset for whatever reason, if that doesent work take the solonoid out (its 1 13mm bolt and then pull it out, its right below where the shifter goes on the tail shaft) and jump 12 volt power from the battery to 1 prong on the solonoid and the other one to ground on the battery and you should hear it click and while there is power to it it should be very easy to push in, if this doesent work replace the solonoid.

Thanks JonB. I did check the fuse and it was fine. I need to pull the reverse inhibitor assembly and verify that the solenoid is working.
Thanks for the help!

Not a problem, hopefully that solenoid will solve your problem.

I'm looking for the part number for that solenoid and can't find it. Any ideas? I've looked on the GM Parts Direct site. If anyone knows the part number I'd appreciate the help.

12523299 for the harness/pigtail or 12523300 for the solenoid is what I found from this site. Its way down on page 17.

So what problem are you having? Are you trying to put it in reverse while you are moving forward, but it doesn't let you?
Or,
Is it not letting you into reverse at all?

The problem started when I tried to put in reverse and couldn't. I forced it over, defeating the inhibitor function. From then on there was nothing preventing a shift to reverse when looking for 5th. Obviously, I couldn't actually get it in reverse while going 60mph, but it sure doesn't sound good. When I say there was no resistance, I mean there was no resistance at all putting the thing in reverse; way more easy than it ever was in the past.
