I don't think it's the clutch, but its in the bellhousing
Okay, i didn't want to thread jack MPFRANKS, cause i think this is different, but here's my situation.
The all knowing LS1TECH would not even answer...
i think it's my low amount of posts places me lower in their internet hierarchy.
Here's a list of symptoms:
2100 rpms and 1200 rpms there is a grinding/sliding sort of noise that sounds like something a heat sheild would make.
-sounds like its coming from the bell housing.
-You can't feel it at all,
-the tranny shifts fine and sounds fine.
-the fluid's fine
-it doesn't make the noise under load
-but it will do it with OR without the clutch in
it's got a monster stage 3 with 8k on it. replaced pilot, throwout, slave, etc.
I snapped the drive shaft about a week ago and the noise developed after that

I can't picture anything in the bellhousing that would make noise and match up to all of the symptoms/non-sumptoms you mentioned. And with the clue of a driveshaft break and the noise happening after that, I suspect the noise might be caused by something the d/shaft did when it broke. Like maybe it bent a heat shield and now its rattling?

i know but i mean i've been under the car looking for stuff it could be and it's nothing. And the only weird thing is i feel like the heat sheild would just rattle all the time, at just different frequencies... but i mean there's literally two 150 rpm ranges it makes the noise in....

Cutlass is right- certain frequencies will make all sorts of things rattle in my car! Check the heat sheilds around the passenger side of the Y. The exhaust frequency will rattle the exhaust which you normally won't feel because it's absorbed by the mounts. If the Y is hitting the heat sheild you'll most likely hear it and feel it more at certain rpm ranges.

I have virtually the same problem, and it rattles at idle. If I go out and put my foot on the passenger exhaust tip, it goes away. I am going to fix it one of these days. It is def either exhaust, or the shields like you said.
