    Gears

I have a 99 Trans Am WS6 M6. Stock gears are 3.23 I think and I am thinking about changing to 3.73. This car IS my DD. How much would 3.73's shave off a 1/4 mile time?

I am surprised you don't go with the 4.10s since your a 6 speed. Most M6s with 410s usually drop a few tenths, depending on driver mod lol.

all True m6 cars are 342s. the difference from 342 to 373 is nothing isnt worth the time. M6 430s is a good option, 456 if you track alot

the Trex car had 456s, it was in a 11.0 6litre on 7 cylinders it went 11.7. number 5 piston was gone. race weight was 3840. not best times but in healthy state we expected that car to run a low 11 here in PA

the car was DD'd its was actually a buddy's car. Was DD'd for several months.

my DD is a blazer, one of my toys is a 88mm turbo 6spd silverado. i drive that alot. 3k miles so far since it was finished. so tame that anyone could drive it. has 488s and a 230/236 cam....700rwhp on 16psi [not fully cranked either]

To answer your question there is absolutly no issues having 4.10's for a DD, going to 3.73's you will feel a small difference but if your gonna do it you might as well go to 4.10's not worth spending all that money for parts and labor and going with 3.73 gears. There are some on here who have M6 cars with 3.73 gears and will tell you they noticed a big difference, i on the other hand have had 5 camaro's with gear swaps in all and 3.73 gears in my 93Z to me was not worth it and ended up changing it to 4.10's and did so in all my camaro's ive had. Just becarefull to break them in properly and not to abuse it soo much in your 1st gear take offs and hard 1st to 2nd gear shifts its a higher probability of breaking since it has more teeth and the rear ends on our cars arent exactly top notch.

thats probably why i was told to get 3.73 so I wouldn't break my rear end lol New rear end is almost 3k though isn't it?

if it was a choice in getting 3.73's or nothing, id stick to your stock gears. Even with 3.73's you can still break gears our rear ends are not going to take it either way with 3.73 or 4.10, yes you have a higher chance of breaking the 4.10's but you take a risk either way. Id keep your gears and put money into something else like LT's if not a combination of a couple of other aftermarket parts. Also about shaving off time on the E.T's you will in some cases be slower as i was because of NO TRACTION, with gears it will be a tremendous help with good sticky tires and we all know with gears and sticky tires what happens to our rear ends especially, lol. Ofcourse there are some cases, very few that have gotten away with it.

You have plenty of power, with those mods you will more then likely with a few hard take offs snap and break the 3.73 gears and in order to fully take advantage of gears you need good sticky tires. Stick with the 3.42's you have and down the road invest in a good rear end set up if you plan on keeping your car for a while.

good quailty gear nd youll be fine. Gear the car for the RPM range of the Cam. depending on how you drive is how the story of rearend will last. there has been 10bolts pulling 1.5s without braking and granted some pulling 2.0s braking.
