    Can't shift into gear

All of a sudden while I was at a stoplight I couuldn't shift into gear. Had to turn the car off and start it in gear to get it off the road; how embarrasing. I can shift into any gear while the engine's not running but once it is, forget about it. Any thoughts on this?

check clutch fluid level in clutch master cyl.
slave cyl/throwout bearing might be cooked. how does clutch feel?

Sounds like the clutch is dragging. Thats why you can get it into gear no problem with the car off, but with the engine running it won't engage.

More than likely a hydraulics issue.

So I actually went underneath the car for the first time and I'm noticing fluid beading along the exterior of the transmission and a pool of fluid on the floor. I look out in the driveway and I see a stain right where I used to park my car. So this has probably been happening for a while now. As for the clutch, it goes down with little resistance until the end of travel where I can feel some pressure. I was able to shift into gear with the engine running after pumping the clutch 20 times just to see if I could. So I'm wondering if it's a leak in the system or would slave cylinder failure would cause so much fluid to be visible on the outside?

Slave cylinder failure. Check the clutch line, but its unlikely that its causing a leak. 9/10 times its the slave. Mine started leaking before it went out too, but it was a slow leak.

There is hydraulic hose that goes into the bellhousing on
the drivers side. hose may be broke or not seated.
or seal may be bad. If good then the slave cylinder as got a leak
and needs to be replaced. that means trans and bellhousing
have to be removed for repair, and i would with no ??? replace clutch
    at that time.

    Update:

Had the transmission dropped and they found a spring that had somehow managed to fall out from the plate and end up in one the splines. So now I got a new clutch, flywheel and had them replace the slave cylinder while they were in there.
