Purple- 1998 Pontiac Trans AM
Bad Drag Racing Experience. Tranny Problems?
I tried out drag racing for my first time this last friday night with my '98 Trans Am 6 speed transmission. On my third run on the quarter mile i was shifting from second to third gear. But instead i ended up grinding the gears when i tried shifting to third gear, then tried to put it back into third but instead threw it into first gear. I had no idea that I got in first gear and i let out the clutch going about 80 mph. The entire car shook violently along with the shifter and the tires were smoking due to the low gear. Huge Mistake! Now the car still shifts fine and the clutch feels fine yet but it makes a rattling noise all the time now which is quite loud. It rattles while drinving in gear and when the clutch is engaged. Im thinking it is from the transmission too. Any ideas on what i would have broke?

Ouch! Sorry to here that! Probly gonna have to rebuild the top end. Don't forget to get a Pro 5.0 shifter to prevent that mistake again.

Wow, should have had an automatic for your first time out. I think this ones gonna cost you more than a $1500.00 bill.
It's hosed.

Question is are you sure it's from the trans or is it the engine ?
If it's the engine then bent pushrods is probably the answer like Mr Lou's said.
And actually it's not a hard job, but you might want to get a telescoping pen magnet to pull any broken peices out of the pushrod holes.
And yes I've been there.Craig

ouch dude, i did the same thing first time taken it out. I mis-shifted from 3rd back to 2nd, i thought i spun a bearing, it even cut off on me. I had my 1st car payment do the following week too. I parked it and saved for a few months, came out and bought a whole cam kit because i thought my whole valve train was f'ed up. spent a lil over $1k.
It turned out to be 3 badly bent pushrods, wish i would of read more or atleast made a thead about it then i could of atleast drove the car with new PRs...i did the cam anyways
