This is a discussion on ATF in Manual...... within the Manual Transmission forums, part of the Drivetrain category; This may be a very dumb question. Can you put ATF (Automatic tranny Fluid in a Manual? (T-56))...

    I think that the recommended fluid for a t56 is Dex/merc 3

The F-Body T56 is designed to use Dexron III Automatic Trans Fluid. That should be the only thing you out in it.

It says "Dexron III only" right on the side of the case.

Sure you can, but its probably not a good idea. The transmission reccommends Dexron ATF only, meaning its not designed to run on anything else. Why risk damaging the tranmission by using the wrong fluid?? Makes no sense.

Just put in a good synthetic ATF fluid and it will be fine.

I'm saying Synchromesh is not the best choice for T56's. It doesn't say in the manual or on the trans to use "Synchromesh or ATF", it says "use DEXRON ATF ONLY" and "use of other fluids besides Dexron III ATF could cause damage to the tranmission".

They aren't telling you to use Dexron III ATF only for their health, thats what the trans is designed to run on, use it.

so the moral of the story is..... im not completely stupid for thinking that it can run on ATF

i already spent the money on it so i guess i will take the risk of using the RP.

thanks for the quick replies and all the help

Be worried. You have been told to put "nearly five" quarts in your T56 . Thats "nearly" 1 extra. The T56 take 4 quarts , filled properly.Maybe there's a spillage allowance there. Over filling is not only costly( extra/ waste$$) but will cause shifting problems on its own.
If you still have the original paper-lined blocker rings in your trans, you would do best to go with non-synthetic ATF. Some synthetic formulas "eat" the very glue that holds the paper together. The Mobil 1 ATF synthetic is the only oil approved by Tremec for use in the T56. Thats tested. The damage does not show up right away but long term can be a death sentance. If you have already swapped out the blocker ring assemblies for the carbon-particle parts, you have much less of a concern.

Why don't you explain to everyone how you can overfill the transmission?? You can't, because its not possible unless you are a moron.

You put the car on level ground, drain the fluid, and then refill it with new fluid until the fluid overflows out of the fill hole. If you put more than that in, it will just come right back out. Therefore you cannot possibly overfill it unless you somehow pumped fluid over the fill hole and then put the plug in very quickly. Not going to happen to anyone with any common sense.

Dude, I had the same question (Read my post). For What it is worth - M6 Trans Fluid Choice.

I called Tremec directly and discussed this with their engineering hotline four weeks ago. The other may work fine, but there COULD be issues. I read about blocker ring wear, etc and could not figure out the facts from fiction. Being an engineer, the best way is to gets answers is directly from the folks who design and manufacture the actual product. That is why I called Tremiec hotline in Michigan, I needed an answer vs. opinions. The RP probably does shift like butter, probably won't hurt a thing.

Worth noting, while many cars use the T56, the internals are build to different specs depending on what the manufacture (of the car) wants/needs/and is willing to pay the vendor for each unit, this is factored into the complete cost model for any product over it's life-cycle and take into account warrenty expectations and other factors. In short, each configuration can be unique to the specific model it is installed in. Hence the maintenance (Fluid in this case) is unique.

In a GM F-Body product, they (Tremec) want you to use DEX III.

I know you seem to have a very hard time seeing beyond your seemingly limited view but here goes. If you fill while on stands the trans is not level and can be over filled. If you do not leave the plug out and allow the "selling" drain out of the excess= overfilled. Yes it is a mistake to do this but it is possible for to people to err. Also , if you have altered the suspension of the car you no longer can say the trans is at the proper attitude/ level.Does calling people morons make you feel superior? It certainly does not sound like you are beeing supportive or helping anyone.
There are also some who fill the trans through the shifter "port " while performing other operations, like a rebuild. This saves the undercar mess. So it is not too out of place for someone to mis-fill a trans. In actuality metering in the oil volume is the REAL way to do this.
