Changing rear end gear ratios does not give your car any more horsepower nor does it make it faster. It simply allows you to get into the powerband sooner from a stop. Your car will not accelerate any harder in any gear than it would with 3.42's, thats theoretically impossible. The major advantage of 4.10's is that you can get off the line faster and get the engine into the powerband more quickly, that it all.

I just changed my rear from 4.10's to 3.42's. The 4.10's killed my highway performance and top end (4th gear topped out at 110MPH and I had to go to 5th...useless) and I was constantly shifting while driving around town and on backroads, because each gear was so damn short. My car was not any faster, it just made my gears a hell of a lot shorter and killed my highway performance and fuel economy.
I was wondering what the redline in 4th would be with 4.10s, you'd have to have a cam and a higher RPM limit than the 6200 stock allows to really use these gears at the drag strip. Maybe 6600 or so?

I've read a lot of people here that said they lost only 1-2 MPG highway with 4.10s, you say you lost a lot more than that?

My redline is set to 6800...I usually (racing) shift around 6500 and I'm around 125mph in 4th shifting to 5th.

I have 4.11 gears and at the track I cross the 1/4 in 4th with a little still to go and I trap at 107MPH.

I would have to think that I can get more than 110MPH out of 4th...but I can't say for certain as I've never tried.

    I am running a 275/40R17 Nitto DR.

And to comment...if you are able to get off the line quicker...and into the power band sooner with a lower gear such as a 4.11...that would make your car quicker or accelerate faster.

Sounds about right for the gears/RPM you can do. I've been wondering what I should do about the rev limiter if I'd change the gears to a 4.10. I think before I do that I'd make a cam switch.

Do you have headers/ORY? Too Fast has reached 109+ MPH many times at the drag strip....you bet your ass I have to shift into 4th to get that MPH. I have to shift into 4th even when the weather isn't cooperating and I'm *only* trapping 105. Still beats almost all other dailey drivers I see there LOL.

Before I make a cam change, I'mma try an LS6 intake. My goal is to trap over 110, still with over 27 MPG highway.. Impresses the hell outta the ricer crowd!

Especially true for an engine that is a bit high strung to begin with, it needs gears.

Redline in 4th with 4.10's and 285/40/18 tires is 112MPH for my car.

I logged 21MPG on a 150 mile trip, all highway averaging about 75MPH in 6th gear.

Is you motor stock?? I can't see your MPG dropping that far with a 4.10 gear and a .50 overdrive.

Your tires are also 26.97 inches tall, a full inch taller than the factory tire. Did you recalibrate your speedo? Because your miles would be off quite a bit, not racking up as many as you actually travelled, which in turn would lower your MPG figures when you did your math.

75 mph in 6th gear (.50) with 4.10's and your 27 inch tall tire is only roughly 2,000-2,100 rpms.

I took a trip in ours with the stock 3.42's, and cruised through the desert at around 1900-2000 rpms, going 85 mph for most of that tank of gas, and got 29 mpg, that's with a small cam and headers. I can't figure how you did 8 mpg worse at about the same cruising rpm.

I have a very hard time believing you got 29 MPG at that speed. Do you have some sort of fuel economy tune?

Just my own tuning. I haven't really done anything to promote fuel economy though.

If I slow it down to about 70 mph it gets 30 mpg and change. As long as I keep rpms around 2,000 (which is about 85 mph with the 3.42's) it consistently gets 29 mpg. All open desert and pretty flat driving without any traffic.

    Sadly now demodded :(

My bone stock 98 gets 27mpg at 80-85 on the hiway in 6th gear (driving on that same flat desert) so I don't see 29mpg being out of the realm of possibility.

FWIW, my modded 2002 with an A4 and the TC locked up gets 25mpg at 80 mph.
    67 Camaro: K-K + 797-z (look it up), 454/Th400/4.10 12-bolt = 6mpg, PS/PDB/PW tilt, tach, gauges...

2005 Corvette LS2/M6 Magnetic Red Metallic (What else would it be?) w/ Cashmere interior

    2002 Z28: NBM/Tan, MTI smooth lid, smooth bellows, !AIR, !cats, 1-3/4" QTP SS LT's, 2-1/2" TD's with X-pipe, MagnaFlows dumped at axle, custom welded SFC's, MidWest Chassis body mount adjustable T/A, 3400 stall, 3.23 gears (was 2.73). Tuned: 343rwhp/357rwt (before TD's). Best: 12.559 @ 108+, 1.73 60' @ 3500' DA w/MT ET Street DR's.

Interesting on your 02 Jim. My own 2002 with an A4 and 3.23 gears gets right at 25 mpg also. I went from here to Kingman on I-40 (about 140 miles) and set cruise at 80 mph, and filled it back up when I got there, 25 mpg on the button. Of course going that fast in the auto I was spinning about 2500 rpms.

3.23 gears, a lock up TC and nothing more than a smooth lid, headers, modded tranny and better exhaust leaves the 02 pretty stock. All of my mods are lid, exhaust, tuning and suspension (to get the tires to plant).

I got that 25mpg figure coming back from LA earlier this year.

Pretty good. Mine is probably even more stock. I just have headers and off road Y, still the stock exhaust system from there back. A lid and smooth bellow on the intake side, and a 3400 stall converter along with a tune. Same 3.23's as yours.
On I-40 I had to climb in elevation through some mountains outside of Kingman so it wasn't completely flat on that drive. I'm also confident that if I slowed my cruise speed down a bit to hold rpms closer to 2,000 I could do even better mpg in that car. But I'm not complaining about 25 mpg

Motor is all stock internally. Mods are just basic bolt ons. I have LS6 intake, LT headers, true duals, and a tune.

Your tires are also 26.97 inches tall, a full inch taller than the factory tire. Did you recalibrate your speedo? Because your miles would be off quite a bit, not racking up as many as you actually travelled, which in turn would lower your MPG figures when you did your math.
Yep. Speedometer was recalibrated on the dyno when it was tuned. Speedometer is still off by 5MPH though, but its 5MPH fast at 70MPH, not 5MPH slow.

75 mph in 6th gear (.50) with 4.10's and your 27 inch tall tire is only roughly 2,000-2,100 rpms.
My tach shows around 2300RPM at 75MPH.

I don't know. 4.10 gears do have more parasitic losses though, and even a couple hundred RPM higher than stock can make a large difference in highway fuel economy numbers.

I used to consistently get 26-27 MPG. After the Hookers/ORY, it improved about 1.5. Best I've ever gotten is 28.1 average on two tanks (6th gear, ~75 MPH, to stay somewhat on topic). Not complaining one bit, it wasn't that long ago my cars would get 9 city, 10 highway. And they didn't go any faster than the WS6. And they might overheat. Could only stop quickly one time (stupid 4 wheel drum brakes).

Then you have 4.56's if you are running a stock size tire.
