I'm having the same problem with my 3rd gear. And upon doing my own research, I've narrowed it down to it either being my 3-4 Synchros or the slider keys on 3rd gear themselves having worn out enough to where they no longer help you ease into the gear, which is why it grinds.

so my guess is if its the same with yours, it could be your synchros or slider keys......

go to www.lastofthebreed.com and check out all of their info on the t56 tranny, they got lots of good stuff and even a link to a complete breakdown of all the parts in your tranny =D an engineering delight lol

yeah, neither did i either cause tranny rebuilds are expensive, especially for me still being in college, but luckily, my brother and I are going to take the tranny out one of these weekends and do the rebuild ourselves. Will DEFINITELY save us a lot of $$$ on the labor.

Plus, I found a really good rebuild kit for all the synchros slider keys on ebay for about $200. I figured I'd replace them all with new ones before another goes out...

Now, I just need to save some $$ for a clutch while it's down.....

chances are if it is 6th gear it is not syncros.. could be but not the first choice in my book...

3-4 go out on a regular basis in stock cars.. they outright suck...

Good to know, that way I can upgrade to stronger syncros....and I thought I'd help out since I figured it might be the same problem as mine, but to be honest, I'm not well endowed with vast amount of knowledge on the t56.

But I hope after I tear her apart to switch out the syncros, I'll know much better =)

oh definitely! I haven't bought the rebuild kit for it yet, but now that i know it's a common thing for the 3-4 syncros to go out, i'm definitely look into spending the extra money for a much stronger and better rebuild kit than stock.

that and i'm waiting for next paycheck so I can go ahead and purchase the LS7 flywheel and clutch combo

putting it back stock would be a big mistake.. haha...

syncros, shift forks, flywheel, clutch... thats what i would do.. anything beyond that is over my head if it needs to be upgraded..
