    Transmission Fluid Level Too High?

I just changed the fluid and filter in my 2002 TA A4 transmission. I followed the instructions in the Haynes Repair manual but now have transmission fluid drippiing from the front of the bell housing. The book calls for 5 quarts but the instructions say to start with 7 pints and add accordingly. I've put in less than 4 quarts but still appears to be too much. My old eyes have a hard time getting the bifocals lined up on the dip stick but thats another issue . . . or maybe not. Anyway, if the level is too high (it can't be by much) is that a serious problem (blown seal on the spline or other problems?) or will the excess blow out and them all will be ok?

Any knowledge on the subject will be appreciated.

let it idle for a while on a level surface (you are checking it with the engine running in park right?)

if you changed the filter, 5 quarts should be about right, sometimes it takes a while for the fluid to drain completely from the dip stick tube and causes bad readings on the stick

Thanks for the input. Yes, checked while engine running and in park after about a 20 mile drive to get up to operating temp. That was Saturday. Took a shorter drive Sunday and parked, didn't check level but checked underneath a couple of days later and no drip. This car spends most of it's time in the garage so I'll check the level again the next time I get it out. I suspect all will be ok.
