    normal drive or overdrive

What do you guys leave your A4's in when driving around town? Overdrive or just the normal drive? I heard somewhere that leaving the car in overdrive all the time kills the transmission's life by increasing "sprag" or something, is this true? Does it really matter? I ask because I leave mine in normal drive but I've noticed I get better gas when it's in overdrive, not that I really care about MPG, just curious as to the repercussions.

I don't worry about the longevity of my trans driving around town. It seems to be getting on it that causes the problems
I leave mine in od although I have no knowledge to say which is better.

See I use D because i've noticed it raises the shift points and that makes for more music out the tailpipes I've also heard somewhere that the low shift points the OD uses puts stress on the tranny I don't know how true that is

I am kinda curious myself as I have always left it in d not 3 cruising around but with the 3.73's my car's rpms are higher that the stock 3.23's. Also would.like to know since I have a cam and stall so my car runs better in the higher rpm range now. I know manual shifting all the time can damage a stock trans but not sure about leaving it in 3 in low speed traffic.
My 93 5.0 stays in d until I get somewhere I am steadily pulling 40 plus speeds then I slap it in od but thee old aod is a lot more stubborn and clunky if I don't than my 4l60 which seems to bee happy shifting through all 4 hears itself.

yeh I do the same, I leave it in normal drive until I get on the highway(60+) then I throw it into OD to enable 4th gear.

same here and been doing it that way for a long time. Its got 160k on it now and still chirps the hell outta 2nd with 3.23's.

OD is what you should be using. There is no added stress

A4- in normal drive the highest the tranny will shift into is 3rd. It won't shift into 4th unless it's in OD

I always thought there was 4 gears and then OD. i guess that goes to show my understanding of the mechanical aspect of things is lacking

The owners manual says 4th OD is recommended for normal driving,3rd is for hilly winding roads.

When I go to the drag strip I use 2nd gear for my burnout and 3rd gear for the run.
