N00b here, help me with some ???'s?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well I'm very new to F-body's, the car I'm going to purchase will be my first one. It is a 98 LS1 Camaro, A4.
1.What are the stock rear end gears for these cars?(I believe this car came with the stock gears and not optional ones)
2.Also the car has 87k miles on it so it will be due up for its first fluid and filter change, what kind of filter and fluid should I have the mechanic put in it? I obviously don't want to mess it up, which i hear can happen with after market transmission oil.
3.Also I was thinking about putting a shift kit in it, but it shifts fine as is, is this overkill? Should I just leave it as is? Thanks
4. And just to clarify, although I am pretty sure of this answer already, the A4 has 4 gears and then overdrive correct?

You probably have 2.73 gears being its an auto, you can call the dealer with your vin# to verify. If you buy a shift kit it should come with a filter. I put a b&m kit in mine and i love it. it shifts like right now. As far as the fluid goes b&m also makes a good synthetic tranny fluid. I've always had good luck with b&m and there products, but thats just my .2. An A4 is 3 gears with one gear overdrive. Good luck!

Sweet, I might just have a shift kit installed and the fluid and filter changed all at the same time. Thanks for the advice.

is it a Z28 or SS? Z28 could have 2.73 or optional 3.23. If its a SS then its 3.23

Look on the drivers side door for either GU2 (2.73) or GU5 (3.23).

Here are the RPO codes for factory gears. Since your's is an auto, you won't have the 3.42's.
GU2 Axle, Rear 2.73 Ratio
GU3 auto tranny,
GU4 Axle, Rear 3.08 Ratio
GU5 Axle, Rear 3.23 Ratio
GU6 Axle, Rear 3.42 Ratio
G80 Axle, Rear Posi-traction (Limited Slip)
