losing lockup on stall converter
Hi guys, I just picked up a 2001 Camaro. It has a 4000 stall in it, I lose the lock up in OD if I don't keep a load on it. Wondering if this is normal or if I have a problem. This is my first car with a stall so I don't no crap about them.
thanks,Brian

Thats usually the opposite. Giving it more gas will unlock the stall.
If I remember correctly, lockup occurs @ around 45 mph.
Does it stay locked in D?
Could just need some more tuning.Black 1999 Blown Convertible A4

It stays locked in drive almost all the time. It mostly acts up in OD on the freeway if I go down hill. I have to down shift into drive to get it to lock back up.

It stays locked in drive 99% of the time. It mostly acts up in OD on the freeway if I go down hill.

any other mods? Do you know if it was ever tuned for the stall? You will probably have to have the misfire detection desensitized.....that's most likely the reason for the stall unlocking but without seeing the tune or knowing more about the car I'm not 100% on that. Does it lock back up after after a bit when it unlocks?

Down shifting your auto trans @ speed is'nt a good idea. Especially if it's a stock trans.
Better to cuise with the rpms up a little in 3rd than to down shift to it..
I'm with Orion, also, need more info about what's done besides the stall.
I also think Ed's right about prolly needing a little more tuning.
You can have the trany tuned, I had my 01 camaros' stock auto tuned for firmer shifts and so forth..
Did the same with the H3, only difference there was I down loaded the trany tune from GM strait to my Hummers transmission.
Kinda plug and play..
Let us know..Last edited by Smittro; 06-22-2012 at 03:17 AM.

Our transmission will do about the same thing coasting down hill. I just haven't taken the time to look at the transmission settings in the tune to see why it might be doing this. It's a Performabuilt Pro Race and a 3,200 stall converter.

with those mods and not knowing who tuned it previously I would definitely recommend getting it retuned by a good tuner.

Had the same issue with my 01 turned out to be that the lock-up clutches were gone and the convertor needed to be replaced or rebuilt. your tuner can check and see if the computer is commanding lock-up or not though

that's why I was asking if it ever relocked on it's own.....usually takes a bit for it to relock. With the cam especially the misfire counts will have to be desensitized. One of the things it'll do if it's seeing x amount of misfires is unlock the converter. The cam and lower mass of the stall will cause that. I turned my misfire counts completely off in the lower rpm's.
I'm not saying that's definitely what's going on.....but it's a possibility.

That makes sense, I'm going to find a good tuner and have it gone through. I have alot to learn with these newer cars. thanks again for the help.

I only have the issue on a downhill when I am coasting -- throttle closed, around 40-45 mph iirc.

jeff.....have you looked at your tcc tables to see what it commands it to release at? Try lowering that release speed some and see if that makes a difference.

I'll check that this week when we get home. Thanks!

a lot of those tranny settings aren't cut and dry.....sometimes you'll have to play with them to get it to do exactly what you want it too. Shift points are also a good example of that. Just because you tell it to shift at x rpm doesn't always mean that's exactly where it'll shift at. You have to play with those rpm and mph settings to get it where you want it. The same kinda goes for those lock up tables. You may have to play with it to get it exactly how you want it.
