Is there an automatic gate and ratchet style shifter that will work with our factory console, like hurst or b & m?

no complete shifter. b/m makes a gate plate for the factory shifter.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's the benefit to ratchet style for an automatic?

well, i thought and could be wrong, the ratchet allows you to manually shift and not skip to the next gear, which would in turn "cause" the transmission to shift at the set shift points. its not really neccessary in our cars because you could tune your shift points in the computer. is this right?
