A6 trans in an L98 3rd gen?
My friend has a L98 350 TPI 3rd gen car that currently has a T-56 in it. He wants to go back to auto.
Are there any A6 trans that will bolt up to the L98 even with slight modification? I assume no.
So my next question is what would it take to make this work? If you can't make it work, what would be the best A4 option, a built 700R4?

A6 is massive. It won't even come close to fitting the trans tunnel in a 3rd gen. It would require extensive surgery with a liquid wrench
Easiest option if he wants to go back to an auto overdrive would be the 700r4 that originally came in the car. Or possibly a 350 turbo with a gear vendor unit that acts as an overdrive/gear splitter, affectively making it a 6 speed auto. But even that would require a small amount of surgery as the trans tunnel funnels down where this bolts on.

Thats too bad, I guess that its the same for a 4th gen too? I was thinking an a-6 when my 4l60e gives up. It supposed to be a nearly indestructable trans.

I was looking into that too but I got a guy who'll build me a bad ass 4l60 for 1500... way cheaper, probably hold more power, I wonder about this gear splitter unit the guy above you mentioned though what do you think about that on a 4l60? build a 4l60 with that and REAL gas mileage would be possible lol

My 4l60 is bad ass built by rpm, but it isn't the strongest of designs. I think putting a gear splitter on a overdrive trans would not be worth the time or money.

id say go th350 or th400, less surgery to get it to work and both proven autos that can handle some serious power when built.
