    4L60E and 4L65...Whats the difference???

    60E vs. 65

    What's the difference? My transmission shop was freaking out when they took my trans apart saying that I had a 65 not 60E even though it is written on the side of the trans. The mechanic was talking about how the input shaft was different and didn't have a step down on the end like other 60E's. They also talked about the pump or converter being different. Anyone have any idea of what i am talking about? Just trying to get some info.

    Here's how the 4L65-E differs from the 4L60-E:
    * Five-pinion gears for input and reaction gearsets (versus four-pinion gears in the L60)
    * Heat-treated stator shaft splines
    * Induction hardened turbine shaft
    * Heavier-duty low/reverse roller clutch
    * Additional friction plate added to 3-4 clutch (seven plates versus six in L60)
    * Shot-peened output shaft
    * Revised valve body calibration.

    According to the trans shop, mine did. May have been something the previous owner did but I sure he would have told me when I bought the car. What did the 65 normally go in?

    Sounds like your trans builder has only worked on LT1 and older 4L60Es and TH700-R4s. Any reputable trans shop knows that the LS1 4L60E had a different converter due to the input shaft being longer for the LS1. That makes the pump different as well as the input shaft. Find another trans builder if this guy thinks you have a 4L65E in your car, he probably hasn't seen an LS1 4L60E, let alone a 4L65E.

    4L65E came out in 2003 on trucks only, in 2004 some Corvettes and GTOs had them as well, they have been phased in to replace the 4L60E at the factory. Replacements for 4L60Es (LS1) are still plentifull.
