    Question Water Pump Leaking

After seeing fluids on the ground at school I drove over to a local shop to see what the deal was.... Turns out that my water pump is leaking so I need a new water pump blah blah blah they want to charge me 420 bucks to change it out and my Dad offered to pay for half of it.... But one of my friends offered to change it for free and I woudnt have to pay. So should I let my friend change it for free(he hasnt done it before) or pay half of the price and let the shop fix it and know that it is done right.

$420 to change out a water pump would equal $21 per minute for the labor. Its an easy swap.

420 is a good price from a shop for parts and labor -- if you want to bring it to my shop we could do it for a little less -- Its the Goodyear off Independence and Spring Creek in Plano -- i can give you a deal

For someplace close take it to the GM dealer off of 288 and have Scott do the work. I promise he will treat you right and is honest. Just tell him his old friend in the blue Camaro sent you (we have been friends since elementary school and I would trust him with anything).

I did not realize you were in Angleton, do you make it to the track some ? I am planning a trip there this March.

Do it yourself. It's held on by six bolts.

Can anyone give me a bit of a hint what it would sound like (or feel like) if my water pump ('98 LS1) were to go out ony me while driving? I see little drops coming from that weeper hole thingy, and wondering how much borrowed time I'm on.

if its already leaking then you need to change it...just keep an eye on your coolant level and keep a gallon of water with you intill you change it.

Thanks! I'll be changing it out on Tuesday.

I know this is probably a bone-head question, but...what it is that fails inside the water pump that causes it to leak or rupture?

its the actual pump that begins to fail and you know it by the noises it makes and coolant leaking out the weep hole on the pump behind the bell. When mine went bad, I had a stuck closed thermostat and leaking pump lol...

The hardest part of the install is waking up that morning the next is properly cleaning the mating surfaces

The usual failures are the bearing and seal. The bearing is the noise you hear and the seal leaks the coolant that you see. Through all of this, the pump may pump just fine until the bearing overheats enough to kill the impeller.

    Thanks, guys.

Had the damn pump ($250) changed yesterday. Car should be good for at least another 90,000 miles.

On these threads and others I was led to believe that the weep hole(thingy) was behind the pulley-you can't see it without removing the pulley? So if you see coolant leaking the other cause may be a bad gasket which would not require replacing the pump? Does anyone have a picture of the weep hole? That would be great.

i changed mine cause i was bored and a gasket was leaking.

cost me $105 for the pump and like $8 for the gaskets, took about 45 minutes, only cause the gf wouldnt stop calling.

decided to paint it before the install too...
