Black- 98 SS
tensioner pulley
Hey guys,
I just finished installing my new 408 in my SS, it's not tuned yet, but I've been trying to put a couple miles on it first. My car keeps throwing the main belt. The first time it happened when I downshifted and got on it a little bit. I put a new belt on the car and now it happened again while just backing up. The belt looks like it tracks straight and all of the pulleys look true. The only thing I can think is that my tensioner pulley might be worn out (33K miles) and can't handle the torque of the new motor? Is this possible? What do you guys think and what do you suggest? Thanks for your help.
Jeff

You can get an adjustable tensioner pulley from Katech.

when my wife's car was doing that, i noticed the tensioner arm would pivot sideways (longitude or front to back of car).

When it happened to me, I was making a 1/4 mile pass. Went to pull off the return road and didn't have power steering, looked down and saw engine temp rising fast. I coasted back to the pits to find the belt laying on the cooler lines undamaged. Put the belt back on and spectated for the rest of the night so I could drive home.

Just buy A Katech adjustable tensioner and be done with it. It solved all my belt issues.
