SLP lid question
I installed my lid on sunday and I thought it was straight forward and easy, except for maf into the neck of the SLP lid. I had to wait for Marylandspeed
to get a new order in from SLP of these lids, but let me tell you the fit was so very tight that I more than once thought there must be something wrong with
the opening of the neck on my lid. I work with 100 inch hardwood and am no weak armed dude, I just could not believe how tight the fit was. I used just a VERY LITTLE oil on both the maf and the inside of the lid itself and had my 24 year old son help me. We finally got the maf in there, after a number of tries. At one time we put so much pressure on the lid that it started to double back on itself. Has anyone else ran into this ? It is hard for me to believe this is the norm with this setup. I wonder if SLP had the measure off a little on this order of lids ?

From reading about these lids and from what ive read everyone says they are really tight fitting, is this lead worth the hassle? i mean are the gains that much more than the stocker?

It will be a tight fit on the first instail but after pulling it off and it gettin hot, it will form too your maf and shouldnt give you any more issue if you should have too pull it off again. As far as gains, The lid gets rid of the baffles in the stock cleaner and is more straight forward entrance for the air. The gains arent very high but when you combined them with an exhaust and future mods it will pay off.
The two biggest things are allowing the engine too breath and let that air out so the intake and exhaust should be addressed when modding.

Mine fit tight also(although not that tight).
I did feel the gains in "seat of the pants" driving and highly recommend as a first mod!

My SLP slid right in place, no pushing or forcing anything. You may have gotten a rushed one that was a bit off. As long as it fits and there are no air gaps you should be fine.
Mine immediately made a noticeable in sound, and throttle responsiveness. People claim 5-10HP gains from a lid, depending on your setup. It will make more power with other mods. Most people do a port & polish, coolant bypass, and/or bump stop mod when changing lids.

his lid fits super tight because it is the new design. There was a hold on the order because SLP redesigned the lids recently.

I see that. It says, "Note: SLP lids are currently on backorder while they go through a slight redesign to make it even better. We hope to see some by mid-March. Sorry for the delay." on one website. Wonder why the redesign?

I believe 99blueZ hit it right on the head, the new lids must be different in this way, may be for a more secure fit ?
Branden from Maylandspeed is a straight shooter. He is honest. I have enjoyed buying products from him and he emailed me saying just what
jag42420 says here.
I'll tell you what, I don't ever expect anything to enter my intake through this connection.
Thanks for the input guys, and all the best to you.

When you put it onto the maf did you have to get it over th elittle tab taht is on the maf.....because my lid hangs over the box itself and won't seal right......

That small ridge, or lip on the edge of the MAF is certainly an issue.
The fit is so tight to begin with that this just makes the job even harder.
When you say " lid hangs over the box and won't seal right" Did you make sure the four tabs that stick out from behind the SLP lid are slid into the openings provided for them ? My set-up is a tight fit also, I just put a new filter in today and if everything isn't just right my two clips won't fasten correctly.
Hope this helps........

it gets even tighter if you get the SLP smooth bellows. oh man was that thing a bitch to get on. But I took it off recently to check my air filter and it was much easier the second time. I think it all gets stretched and formed over time with engine heat? I recommend the lid, I also did the throttle body bypass. it was pretty easy to do, and now I don't have hot coolant heating up my throttle body.

I don't recommend the bellows, it really does nothing other than dress up the bay a little. I had one and I sold it.
My lid slid right on but the MAF was a bitch to pull off and put back on. I had to muscle it in. No problems now though.

Severe: why did you take off the lid for smog? its legal isn't it?

I have the same setup, smooth bellow and SLP lid. I also noticed the lid was a tight fit into the MAF, and it took some work but it fit's fine though. The smooth bellow is a worthwhile mod in my opinion. Anytime you can remove ridges and irregularities in the air stream that create turbulance it's a good thing, hence the reason we all put lids on in the first place,,,the smooth bellow is just a little added extra, getting rid of the accordion looking piece of rubber is a good idea. Every little bit helps.
In the instructions from SLP it tells you to assemble the lid, MAF, and bellow and slide the entire assembly onto the throttle body. I found this difficult at first, and my clips were also popping off as described earlier. But once I took the time to carefully line everything up it worked perfectly.
I have since removed the lid a few times for various reasons, and I have found it much easier the second time around. I simply remove one clamp around the throttle body/smooth bellow and unclip the lid, remove the MAF wiring and air intake temp wiring, and lift the entire thing off as one assembly with MAF and bellow attatched. Takes about 30 seconds and goes right back on the same way. After a few times it fits much better and doesn't fight me anymore. Larry.

What TB bypass is & how to do it: http://www.installuniversity.com/ins.../tb_bypass.htm
The only actual dyno testing performed was on an LT1 http://www.bmrfabrication.com/tb-dyno.htm . As you can see, it netted a 6.93HP max increase with a 5.6HP average gain. The theory is cooler air = more power. If you don't drive in a lot of snow & ice it won't hurt anything. The TB is warmed up to keep it from freezing up/icing over. There are several compaines that sell the kit to do it, but all you really need are 2 small hose clamps and a piece of hose. Some people do this mod and some do not. I did it. Every 1HP gained is like dropping 10 pounds from the car. If it nets 3, that would be like 30 pounds, and so on. The price is right and my TA is garaged, never seeing ice or snow.

I bought a little kit from ebay. cost me like, 5 bucks. all it had was a brass dealy with barbs that connects two rubber hoses together and 2 worm clamps. the hoses from the car were too short for my liking, so i went out and bought some fuel hoses from Autozone, and used that. I'll put a pic up in a bit showing it.

Don't worry about the freezing up issue, I never found that to be a problem. I have an LT1 that I did this to, and drove it all winter, it got well below zero here for 2 weeks straight and I never once had a problem with icing up, and even run a cold air intake on it as well. No worries.
