if you want to put any kind of coting on them you will have to sand or blast them. its all in the prep. you can paint them with the high temp header paint after striping them but it will only last a few years tops if you drive in rain. and i would say look at eastwood also thay have a lot of stuff.

I'm catching the "don't fix what isn't broke vibe." But I can't be the appearance sponsor and not have a blingin' engine bay. Gone too far like that and I need to represent.

Unless the car is garage kept and only comes out during nice days in the summer, you're going to have the same problem over and over again. The coatings only last so long - road debris, heat cycling, and corrosion really take their toll on them too. Plus, each time you have to recoat or repaint them and sand the rust off, the metal keeps getting thinner. Hedmans aren't very thick gauge metal to begin with, so eventually they'll probably end up rusting through in spots.

If its your DD, there is no substitute for stainless steel headers. A good set of 304 or 321 stainless headers will last forever, and there is no need to coat or paint them, just install them and you're set. For the cost of getting them jet hot coated twice, you could probably buy a set of stainless headers.

you could take them off and have them refinished and coated but i think its a big waste of money... the other problem is that you dont know what they look like from the inside as well....more than likely the inside is ok or at least much better then the outside is. either refinishing means removing metal, which means thinner walls more warpage from heat......not to mention what its going to cost/time to do all this plus the coating.......in the long run, and perfotmance wise you are much better off just buying a new set of stainless or coated headers...

You're doomed LOL. Yeah you can paint them but thats a lot of work and stainless are available at reasonable cost these days why bother. That damn rust will always come back! And without good metal prep(i.e. lots of work) it might be back in a matter of months!

paint is only designed to prevent rust during storage and shipment...not ment to be a permenant solution...tss you no better..with the climate we live in..you know SS is the only way to go.

wrapping your headers should help. a friend of mine drives his Z as a DD in the summer and sees rain. he unwrapped his headers last year when he pulled his engine and he said they looked practically new.
So, i'm planning on getting the painted Pacesetters and wrapping them.

yes automatic transmission fluid. We use it all the time on our dirt track cars headers. You just spray some on rag then rub it on the header (use alot). Start the car and let it warm up and burn on the fluid off of it. Then repeat, it will take a couple of times of doing this, but it will get rid of the rust on the header and leave a nice black finish.

Dont fix it if it isnt broken and when it is broken replace it with something less likely to break the next go around.

Exactly, thats why i susgessted what i did. Beacuse it is not that hard to do and does not take that long and it will make his engine bay look better untill he needs to get different headers.

no matter what you do they'll flake and rust eventually unless theyre stainless. save your money.
