    no muffler=bad cam sensor?

this happened a couple months ago and ive still been thinking about it.

i wanted my car louder and was curious to see how it would sound if i did away with my muffler(cut it off). i had it cut off right behind the rear axle. i liked the way it sounded. only word that comes to mind to describe it was "raw". sounded like my dads 383stroker with dumped TD's which is what i was going for.

anyways.....long story short.....about a week after i had my muffler cut off my car started backfiring really bad at startup and sometimes would not start till 3rd or 4th try. sounded like a fucking shotgun, really fucking embarassing. this wouldnt happen everytime i tried to start it. id say, every 4th or 5th time i would need to run an errand or somethin is when it would occur. took it to my mechanic and explained what was going on and told him i had cut off my muffler and this shit started happening a week later(i asked if he thought me cutting off my muffler had anything to do with it, he said no, he see's no reason why it would. i ran without the muffler for about 2 weeks before having my muffler welded back on. only backfired once after i put the muffler back on before i left it in his shop for a few days, turns out it was my cam sensor. so i had that replaced and its ran great/started right up/no backfire since then.

my question is: could me cutting off my muffler and running without a muffler cause my cam sensor to crap out?(that being the only reason?)

reason i ask is......my dad and my(our-my familys)mechanic are pretty good friends and although he(mechanic) told me cutting off my muffler had nothing to do with my cam sensor crapping out my dad told me that he told him that "was" the reason.

    thanks in advance!

wow, quick! thanks. thats what i was thinking also.

so my cam sensor was more than likely causing the backfire? and not the lack of muffler?

reason im just now bringing this up is because i liked the way my car sounded w/no cats and no muffler and the only reason i had it welded back on is cuz i thought it might solve the problem. i want to have it cut off agian but am a little iffy/worried that if i do agian i will have more problems. ie:backfiring...

    thanks lous for quick response!

    Yup.

Bad cam sensor can create all kinds of problems. Backfiring included.
IF the sensor is bad, it should be setting off the Service Engine Soon light though.

my SES light has been on constantly since i cut my cats off 3 years ago. never got around to getting o2 sims or whatnot. i usually have it scanned once or twice a month for peace of mind to make sure thats the only reason its on.

but like u mentioned, a bad cam sensor should/would throw a code and that it did! lol i took it to autozone to have it scanned for codes to see if any new ones came up prior to leaving it at my mechanic and sure as shit i had like a total of 6 not counting p0420 for my cats. took the printouts from autozone to my mechanic and he determined it was the cam sensor.

    Nope.

If you like the sound...then leave it. As long as you hacked it off after the y-pipe.
With it being louder, it will make some decel 'pops' more noticeable. Shouldn't backfire like a shotgun though.

i remember when i put my bassani mids and y-pipe, the y pipe was the end of the trail for me and my cam position sensor went bad. Weird, but i changed that out.

Yeah, I got an 04 Goat and haven't had the mufflers on it since 2 weeks after I bought it and have never had a problem. Sounds great without the mufflers. I actually now have Moroso Race Mufflers on it now which is just a through muffler with a spiral in it to add some tone.
