need more sound!!! exhaust question
so my friend just bought an 03 gt with full exhaust and it sounds really really fricken good. makes me feel like a pussy... we all know my car is much faster (no1 is ignorant here...) but u know that feeling... sound means alot.
im still on the stock SS exhaust, and it soudns alright at wot, but horrible at idle... wayyyy to quiet. i dont have alot of money right now cuz im makin payments, payin court costs, payin multiple tickets, etc.
question: What do u all think about me just getting a muffler of my choice for fairly cheap (since some brands like flowmaster go new for under $100) and buy used for real cheap. then have my friend who works in an exhaust shop remove my cat(s) (i only got one right? i know... i should know... its too cold to look under my car right now) get me some exhaust tubing to go from the y pipe straight to my new muffler?
so basically, i could get rid of my cats and i-pipe, sell them to someone on this site (i know ppl are lookin for them), and get a used muffler fabbed in by an exhaust shop
without getting headers or a full catback, would that drastically improve my sound?
is it dumb to buy a used muffler?
how about replacin the cat and i-pipe with just fabbed exhaust tubing?

Vortex cherry bomb is cheap and loud. (about 100) You should have 2 cats and would need O2 sims or have the rear O2 sensors tuned out. I wouldn't even worry about the mid pipe until you did a decent exhaust if you want to keep it cheap.

about the mid pipes, i jsut meant if i took the cats out, id need to fill in that space.... so i might as well sell the stock cats with midpipe or cats all the way back, and just have an exhaust shop make the pipes to the muffler (i can get that done real cheap)
i always hear ppl saying that cherry bomb sucks... id have to hear it. what do u think of their sound? altho i want loud, i do want a nice tone too, ya know? (if possible with my budget)
i saw some flowmasters for $80 each on jegs...
oh and yea id get o2 sims or ill tune them out

I really wouldn't mess with the cats until you did headers with an ORY or dual exhaust. I'm talking about the vortex model which is a muffler and not the glass pack style that people make fun of. For a hundred it's not going to be the best of course. I had one on my 95 and it sounded really good behind the LT1 with no cat, but that motor sounds better than the LS1. I didn't hear one behind a LS1 yet though, but I think it should sound good.
If your really want to drop the cats it cost quite a bit to have a Y pipe made. They take some time to fab up decent. You can buy pre-made ones for 200, but will have to trash it when you do headers. It really wouldn't be worth the little gain to drop cats without replacing the whole Y.

so ill have to mess with the y pipe to get rid of the cats? i dont see why i cant just cut right at the beginning of the cats, and make pipes from there to the muffler.... or wait... SHIT!!! i just thought about it... there are 2 cats? which means... damnit.
ok nvm. i was thinking there was a cat AFTER the y-pipe, thats why i sounded retarded lol. ok yea your definitely right about not messing with them now.

here, check it out:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LS1-P...spagenameZWDVW
the guy on here is buyin cats for $145 a pair... that would cover the cost of the ORY. then all i gotta do is buy a muffler, which i could sell my muffler for some cash...
sounds like i can get a pretty cheap exhaust setup?

MAC makes a y-pipe for under 200 that bolts up to stock manifolds and gets rid of the cats

Yeah, it's a pain and not cheap to do mods. I want to get rid of my Y and cats too, but decided it's a waste and just do it at the same time as headers. If you search around you should be able to find a used set fairly cheap.

Dude-your idea of just buying a muffler for now is definately the way to go. You dont need a cat back right now and as a matter of fact I wish I never bought my cat back and just went with a tru dual system. You will get awsome sound from just a muffler if you get the right kind. Magnaflow and hooker make direct replacement mufflers for your ride.
