muffler shop said DON'T DO IT!!

Just took off all the EGR junk from my 99 SS and put on a ls6 intake. Called the local shop and they said if I cut out the cat it will be trouble...car won't run properly and could damage engine. I am pretty sure that is not the case but thought I would check in with some guys who have perhaps done this.

What about driving it awhile without a tune even though it has no EGR and no CAT? OK? I do want to get a tune doen but not until my driving season is over and I park er for the winter then mail away the computer...

Thanks for your input! Dont want to wreck my car!!

Send your ecm to Frost for a mail order tune. He'll tune out the rear O2 sensors and egr codes.

Funny how my car hasn't had CATS for 6 yrs now and no issue. Long tube headers for the win...

Not sure what emission testing Canada does so that may be an issue for you.

Thanks for the response. I do intend on sending pcm for a tune, just want to wait until I park the car for the winter. No emission testing to worry about here so that is not an issue for me thankfully!

Thought that the muffler guy may just be unaware or scared to remove factory stuff for whatever reasons....certainly not warranty on a car as old as mine.

Haven't had cats or EGR system on my car for WELL over 10 years. No issues at all. The car will be fine without it, even before the tune, but you will def see a "check engine" light. If you send away your pcm to FROST, the pcm will be back in your hands in about a week. He's really fast with his turn around time. Obviously, it really depends on his work load, but I got mine back in 4 days. So, took pcm out sunday, mailed off Monday, got it back Thursday. Extremely happy with that.

So I am wondering if it is worthwhile if that is all I do. Car is still sporting the stock exhaust and manifolds aside from cme which was Added by previous owner primarily for looks I understood.

Local shop wants $120 just to cut out the cat and put in a chunk of pipe. Should I just leave well enough alone, do the tune and wait until I can afford headers and an x or y pipe? Had to spend the money and only gain a bit more volume...thanks again for your input.

Just wait till you can afford headers and a ypipe. No sense paying for work twice. You will see some gain with no cats but not enough to warrant the extra expense.

I'm very shocked hear an exhaust shop has agreed to illegally remove a catalytic converter. None the less, do longtube headers and an off road Y pipe so you can do all of the work and gain 30 horsepower yourself, along with having the tune done afterwards to correct everything that has been thrown off in your modding stages.

Great thanks all for the great input...always like it when the input I get lines up with what I was thinking. I will hold off until I find exhaust and y pipe that will fit under my slightly lowered car...
