    Missing VIN on Engine Block

I'm confused about a 2000 corvette which my friend is considering purchasing - when I checked it, there is NO VIN number stamped on the little pad on the block ahead of the head on the passenger's side. The current (original) owner SWEARS that there has never been any engine work ever done on it, he has all receipts for work done, plus nothing shows up on carfax or Edmund's report. He even picked it up himself from the museum in Bowling Green...

What's the chance he's just a LYING Turkey?
There appears to be slight swirlies where the VIN should be, and it's almost like you can see the shadow/ghost of a vin.
There aren't any "wrench" marks on the exhaust bolts, nor on the belly pan bolts...

    Any ideas?
    Suggestions?

There is not suppose to be a VIN there. During the classic muscle car era the Engine Suffix Code and partial VIN are on the front pad, but not on these engines.
