Silver- 2003 GTI 1.8T :(
Minor problems with Pacesetter install
First problem being... i seem to be getting this horrid smell of gas which i wouldn't normally mind but its allways there as if i have a bad exhaust leak but i used the stock gasket which was in perfect condition, i got the pacesetter lt's with the A.I.R. provisions attatched, and the ORY... is this a normal problem or can you tell me where to check for leaks...
On top of that i heard they help your mpg but i just got 11.8 mpg after installing them which is my worst compared to my previous worse of 12.5 which had gone up to 15mpg before the header install... so it was an immediate drop of about 3mpg

the !cats mod will definitely make your car a little more stinky. It does sound like you're very rich though. No codes I take it? Front O2's all hooked up correctly and everything? Also, on the drivers side of the motor right above the number one plug is the ECT sensor. Make sure you didn't break that during the install. Do you have any access to logging software? Maybe post up a log.

along the same lines... sorry to somewhat hijack ur thread... does having no muffler also make ur car smell a little more? my car has a cat, but NO muffler, and for some reason once in a while when im parked and the car is running i notice a slight gas smell

The cats burn off all the excess unburned fuel. The muffler shouldn't cause things to smell any worse..
For the original poster, removing the cats for one cause the exhaust to smell pretty bad since the unburned fuel is just coming outta the tips. Since you installed headers, you're running even richer, and without any cats .. it just all adds up.
Get a tune and the smell shouldn't be AS bad.Last edited by Z28venom; 06-10-2007 at 06:33 PM.

The smell is normal as is the gas mileage due to your foot going further to the floor more often now than before to hear the sweet sounds. My untuned 98' w/ 106,000 miles on it with Pacesetters, ORY and LM2 is getting around 28mpg highway.

yea it sounds like you're running rich which is to be expected with a header install.

ouch that sucks. Around here its 300-350. Although i have seen it as high as 500. Oddly enough the one shop that charges 300 is one of the best shops around. Carolina Automasters.
