MAF sensor gut it or keep screen in?
I have a 02 TA and my MAF sensor is made by slp. inside the MAF sensor is a little screen i guess to filter crap from getting into the engine but my air filter already does that. Should i take out the screen to let more air in or keep it in?
thanks, Tony

SLP put it there for a purpose. It was calibrated with that in it.
YOU WON'T GAIN SHIT BY REMOVING IT!!!!Don't be afraid of the bottle!!! Be afraid of your tune!!!

it's an either/or situation, i took mine out personally, and then bunched up that screen material as much as i could, and noticed that the material took up about 35-40% of the opening, thus not allowing maximum airflow. if you look at the MAF on a mustang for example, it's not screened at all, it's in a smaller housing that doesn't take up much of the airway.

The screen is there to smooth out the airflow going over the element. If you remove that screen, you will alter the airflow reading of the MAF Transfer Table, which will need to be recalibrated, but the results will no longer be consistant. On applications where the airflow down stream of the MAF sensor is constant and not turbulant (intake tube is one diameter and straight), you can get away from having no screen. On F-Bodies, the lid is causing huge turbulations as it necks down from a wide rectangle to a cylindrical inlet tube, so the airflow is not very laminar (smooth and constant and predictable) when crossing over the MAF element, this causes inconsistent airflow readings. OEM Calibrators have learned this over the years of experimenting with MAF sensors ... Do not descreen and do not port it! If you want more flow or think your MAF is restricting airflow, go with a screened 85mm+ version ... or just go SD. The stock MAF can handle alot, it is only when cam overlap is increase that the MAF becomes a "restriction" (airflow flowing out of the intake at low rpms/idle), or on serious forced induction applications.

If you think that screen was restricting your airflow your highly mistaken!!!! If you read the last post it is explained in PLAIN engish for all of you that are confused. Like I stated a 7 posts ago it's calibrated with it there so now that you removed it the parameters are NOT RIGHT!!!
Anyways just trying to help the uninformed.

Anything that gets in the way is a restriction to flow. Some of it flows pretty good. Think about it. Can you breath better through a filter, or like you are right now. Same thing as an engine. Obviously the air filter is needed. But anything else in the intake, whether it be the EGR, or the MAF screen, it all adds up. Removing the MAF screen may net you only 1-2HP. But its HP that you didnt have, and its easy enough to remove it. So I ask you why not??

Yes even SLP MAF's. Like apss said, they just put it there to cover thier ass. I mean seriously. What the hell is it doing there anyway. Some cars dont even come with a screen on their MAF. So why restrict any flow, as small as it might be. Its not like its a hard mod to do at all. So why not???

So you really think your gaining 1 or 2 horsepower....... And SLP couldn't figure that one out........
What are they covering their asses for......?
Reason not to is because of the turbulance thats created as stated before.
Do what you want but your not gaining any horsepower by throwing out SLP prior calibrations on the meter.

I read somewhere that the screen helps with low engine speed airflow. Leave it in, supposed to straighten the airflow. Better to lose wieght elsewhere (car, driver) than take the screen out for 1 or 2 HP.

i heard that vette's dont have them either. i have also heard that some people with a4 cars have ran into problems by removing the screen. if you have an SLP MAF then leave it in. I took mine out when i put my HSW dry shot in but didnt really notice much. u make the call. unless your motor is puchin out some ponies leave it in.
