LT1 Block? How radical can i go and be safe?
Couple of quick questions guys. Im looking for info on stock lt1 blocks and how much power they can handel. Im planing on stroking it to a 383 and im aiming for high 500 hp. Im gonna buy the best bottom end i can so im not worried about that but ive never really heard alot of people talk about the block itself and what it can handel. Boost is also a concern as eventually i do plan to run either a turbo or supercharger
Second question is if the stock block wont handel upwards of 500 horsepower what are my viable options with sticking with an LT1 style block. Are there aftermarket companys that cast a stronger one?
Please no dont waste your money and buy an ls1 crap, been there, done that. Just trying to get solid answers. I know i can make big power with an ls1.... i want to know i had to work for it.

I know you should probably start with a vette 4 bolt main block, it should hold probably 600 HP or more safely. Honestly dont much about lt blocks

Yes, it will definitly hold 500 hp. I have built a couple high horse two bolt main blocks using equal to or less than adequite parts. Would a 4 bolt be better, yes, but it is not necessary.
Here is some intersting info. Don't quote me on it as there are many variables that need to be considered.
2 - bolt block w/ OEM main bolts - max. 400 HP
2 - bolt block w/ ARP main studs - max. 550 HP (high nickel blocks - 700 HP)
RPM also plays a larger factor:
2 - bolt block w/ OEM main bolts - max. 6000 rpm
2 - bolt block w/ARP studs - max. 7000 rpm
I would use the block you have if it is in good shape, put some good ARP bolts in it for good measure, and shift at 6000-6200 RPM.Last edited by 9t8z28; 01-03-2009 at 04:23 PM.

sounds good to me, my goal is to go as fast as possible on a limited budget. Not that i couldnt afford to do something a little more crazy but its more of a personal challenge to me to say i have a stock block lt1 in the 500 range i guess lol. Thanks for the help guys
