No, you don't need a new housing.
Unless you want to for some reason.
Down at our local Kragens, they sell 160s for $10.00 for LS1 motors.Be who you are and say what you feel 'cause people who mind don't matter, and people who matter don't mind.'

I've went through this a few times. The LS1 has an integrated thermostat in the housing and is purchased as such. If you buy the thermostat by itself for $10, although listed for LS1's, it does not fit. Even Summit was selling these labeled as LS1 stats but that's incorrect. It's a completely different size and won't go in the original housing. They are actually made for LS2 applications and labeled incorrectly. The only LS engines I've seen that have an actual removable thermostat are the 04 and up LS2's, LQ4's and LQ9 6.0 engine applications.
The correct LS1 theromstat will come with a housing. Unfortunately it's a bit more money. You can however pull the thermostat out if you manage to bend the tabs without breaking them, but it's not meant to come out.

^^ This. I ripped mine apart for the purpose of flushing the cooling system and it is destructive disassembly. I purchased a Motorad 180 degree replacement thermostat for our car and it came with the housing and o-ring.
