I ran my '71 Nova (old LT1) for 60k miles with no filter, foward facing hoodscoop and a brass velosity stack and she still rumbles like a lion....I do believe in suppling clean air to my new stuff and all, but let's get real here....minute particles sucked into a motor for 150k miles or so is not the end of the world.

well was this analysis on just one car? if so there are alot of factors...were you live, how you drive, how many miles, state of engine before the test..and most important..if you oil your filter...oviously if you don't oil your filter it will let more dirt in. So there are alot of variables that can influence any test

I used to use Blackstone all the time. Then a guy told me all that UOA was bullshit. I thought he was crazy as hell.....so I took his challenge....while draining the oil I filled up two bottles. Sent one in...got the UOA.....about two months later...I bullshitted and wrote up mileage and shit...sent the second bottle in...got a totally different UOA...showed metal wear and silicon.....WTF...I use it (UOA'S) from time to time.....just for the helluva it...but I'll never preach UOA again....and I used to preach the shit out of getting a UOA....

    I agree--dyno's can be viewed/worked/different conditions/engine temp....and so on......if it was 10 horse i would be more prone to take a serious look..2 hp is just that..2hp. [i run a VERY lightly oiled kn..have for 6 years...no probs..change oil every 3,000 miles/5,000 kms.]

For the record, I dynoed the Fram versus K&N versus no filter at all and there was less than 2HP difference between the 3. Whoever said that "buying an air-filter for HP gain is crazy" hit the nail on the head.

I used to poke holes in a paper element filter on my '90 S10 Blazer.

But only for the sniffer emissions tests. I'd swap it out in the parking lot before the test and it came right back out after the test was done. It's the only way it would pass.

I'm not going to take sides on this one, but I will attack the following idea: There is a direct correlation to air flow and debris intake. If the K&N is letting more dirt in, which I agree, they do, it is because the filter is more free-flowing. A paper filter has tighter filtration, stopping contaminants, but also slowing down air intake.
