    is it illegal?

is it illegal to remove cats even when the vehicle is registered where there are no smog/emissions checks?

Probably, as is an open cutout, LT/ORY, etc. in states with no testing. Some localities will write you a ticket just for being loud.

cats are federal mandate. federal overrides any local laws.

A shop that gets caught doing that would face severe fines. It'll be tough finding one that's willing to risk it. I've heard that cash talks.

It can cost you 10k is you admit you did it and most shops will only do it if you really trust them. Shops can get slammed really hard if they get turned in for it.

    to answer ur question: yes

will u get caught for it? probably not if ur exhaust isnt obnoxiously loud.

i got pulled over by a state trooper for no muffler... (my cars loud as hell. i heard a lt1 caprice today without mufflers or cats and my cars way louder)... he pulled me over, i talked to him, he wrote me a written warning...
but u CAN get in trouble for it.

cats dont affect the sound half as much as mufflers tho.

State troopers are the only ones really to worry about around here or rookies.
