i need to know about cutouts
I want to buy some cutouts for my 01 ss ls1 but i
- are there any bad things about having them?
- if i want to leave my stock headers on can i easily come back later and replace them with some longtubes?
- do you lose a lot of back pressure if you have these things on?
- will i get a good bit more power
- do i have to mess with the O2 sensors (like will the engine light come on)?
thank you for your responses, any other tips or facts you would like to share will be very appreciated

did you try the sticky's at the top of the external engine forum? just a thought. i will do my best here....
the draw back to cut outs is the noise (which i view as a blessing), the exhaust gases being underneath you, and the loss of a bit of low end torque.
it would be ok to run a cut out with stock manifolds, but would greatly obstruct gains as opposed to longtubes. you want to mount the cut outs as reasonably close to the engine, usually right after the header collector goes into the x or y pipe, application dependent. larger top end gains will come from opening the cut out and letting it dump early, but because of the elimination of back pressure you will lose alittle torque on the lower end. just have to roll with the punches.
you should get your car dyno tuned and get the 02 sensors calibrated to the new exhaust so you wont throw codes.
as i said, the closer up the better to the front end.....
ive always, in my mind, drawn the conclusion that if i was going to do it, i would go two and mount them on an x pipe so they would have there own path and their own dumps. i havent seen any dynos between one or two cutouts, but like i said, it just made sense to me to go with two....
i could be wrong.

a cut out is a cut out. you can always get the electric plate if you felt so inclined. the keith mccord powr plate is what i would recommend. he's an ls1 genius btw. tunes at a shop next door to my old work place occasionally.

There is a spot on our cars, just b4 the exhaust pipes goes over the rear end (passenger side), it almost seems to b designed for ideal cutout placement.

Well I don't know if it nets anything over any aftermarket catback, but i have longtubes w/ a stock catback. So, it definitely helps for me. Its almost like getting a catback that u can turn on and off, but its just a electrical cutout. wen open it is loud, wen closed it is stock sounding. I like that way.

I gained 8 RWHP from my Flowtech electric single cutout placed under the passenger seat. Not a whole lot, but every little bit counts.

Look into the DMH electric cutout. They have a 3 year warranty. The rest of them only have a years.
