o2 sensors monitor the state of ur exhaust (i.e. cats). if ur cats fail to function, ur service engine soon light will come on, telling you that u need to fix something. If you get rid of ur cats, then the o2 sensors will recognize this and trigger ur SES light, when inspection time comes around, u wont pass becasue the light is on in ur dash. o2 sims trick ur cars onboard computer into thinking ur cats are still there and functioning, getting rid of the code. U will pass this portion of the test, but most states require a "visual" check of exhaust (so you can take ur cats and gut them, basically giving u an ory pipe..)(basically they look under ur car and see if u have cats, if u have an ORY pipe with no cats they will fail u on the visual test). Many states even hook you up to something that monitors how much carbon monoxide is in ur exhaust, so even gutted cats will fail you.

my service engine soon light is on in my car because the code says that my cats are going bad (it does not smell though!!!)
does that mean i will not pass inspection???
i can always reset the light before i go right????
