Flow or O.E. muffler 6 cyl.

I bought my 16 year old a firebird with the 3.8, ( he has to build my trust before I give him my T/A ) Question is does a flowmaster 40 series sound to crappy on the 6 cyl. Sounds great on my LS1. I told my son that he would want the OE muffler back on after he hears what a 6 sounds like with the 40 series. Which way to go ? Flow or OE

    Personally I would go Magnaflow.

Just for sound?? Or looking to actually pick up a little power as well?
Flows sound alright but have trouble making the power that other mufflers can produce.

Just for sound. Now remember that this is going on my sons 3.8, not my LS1

Don't misunderstand. I do let him drive my T/A with out me any time he wants to, But It's MY car. He can buy his next one on his own. My first car @ 15 years old was a real 66 Chevelle SS 396. I also grew up with a dragstrip in my back yard. Like 60 yards out the back door was the 1000 foot mark with a clear view. Used to have the NHRA Cajun Nationals there. I do trust him but he'll have to get an LS1/ Ls2/ LS7 with his own money. I just gave him a start. Now how does a 6 sound with a loud muffler.
Sorry for the history story. It's not for this thread but I over reacted.

hey i always love to hear about people who were around back in the muscle car days and what they had. my dad always tells me about then and always brags about his ss big block chevelle and what a beast it was. but he sold it and one day ill buy him another one. do tell more about you chevelle.

honestly I, think that a decent exhaust on a 6 will sound better then just the stock one. i had friends that put mufflers on thiers and they didnt sound to bad. Get a muffler but nothing thatll make it to loud, well louder then a 6 should be.

Yea that's what i'm looking for but the question still exists. What type and brand for a 6 that will give it a growl and not a four banger sound. I'll E-mail you later about the 15 or so muscle cars that I have owned. Yes the were wild and jumped around and you felt the horse power. I now have a 67 Chevelle SS 396 A4. What we have now factory to factory set up would cream any old muscle. They felt very fast because the suspension was so loose that they jumped, flexed, creeked, tons of noise through the floor pans. Any thing over 100 MPH and you thought that you were flying the way the fron ends let all the air under the car. And when this happened the front end got loose. They were a blast to drive but can't compare to todays muscle. Long live the F-Bodied LS cars.

But then again their I go with stories again when i'm just looking for a decent muffler.

Wait till I tell you about my 17 years of racing real dragbikes. Not srteet bikes with Wheelie bars. Nothing like going 0 to 60 in 1.5 with just handle bars to hold on too.

I have heard several on 6ers and they all sounded about the same to me had a semi decent idle sound but under throttle they all sounded hollow. Not quite like the import fartpipe but still distinctively V6.

i think flowmaster makes a "special" type of cat back system for the 6cyl. it has some type of resonater that goes up by the cat if i remember correctly. it's supposed to have that "v8" sound to it.

    but... i dunno...

For some reason I am still thinking Magnaflow is popular with the V6 F-Body's.

My dad did the same thing with me, I got My first car at 15. It was a 1994 3.4 L Firebird 5 speed. After I proved myself he helped me get the Formula I have now when I turned 17. My 16 year old brother just got his first car 2 weeks ago, a 1996 V6 Firebird with the 3.8 and we just installed a magnaflow muffler and some cold air intake system we got off eBay and it sounds pretty damn good for a 6. On my V6 i had flowmaster 80 series on there and it sounded really good because the lt1 and the 3.4 had a similar firing order that made it sound kind of similar to the v8 at idle but anything above 2500 rpm it sounded like shit Go with the Magnaflow for your son.

When I had my 2001 V6 Camaro, I put magnaflows on there and it didn't sound that well until I put in midtube headers from pacesetters then it kind of sounded like a V8 coming out from a loudmouth catback.

I have an Edelbrock catback on my 6 and I love the sound. It doesn't get raspy or anything, just gives it a deeper pitch at idle with a meaner sound at WOT. I like it because it's not a crazy loud catback, it wont wake up your neighbours or be annoyingly loud, but it does give your six a nice smooth deep idle. For me though, even more than that, when I took it to the track the catback alone dropped me .3 tenths instantly. Money well spent.

Have any of you heard a 6 cylinder with true duals? The sound is AWSOME!!! You may have to add a catalytic converter to the left bank pipe to make it emissions legal, but the sound alone is worth the trouble. You will get more than just a great sound though. The true duals exhaust does the same thing for the 6 cylinder that it does for the 8 cylinder. The true duals makes the exhaust flow a lot less restrictive which helps the engine breath a deeper. With the freer flowing exhaust you get added horsepower just as you do with the 8 cylinder car. Again, sound wise, IT IS A GREAT SOUND!!!!!
