External differences among Gen 3/4 engines?

Hello all, this is my first post here.

Are the external dimensions, mounting holes, bellhousing mounts, front accessory mounts, etc. the same among the gen 3/4 engines?

I've gotten conflicting information from other web sites and mechanics, so I thought I would post here. Any good links are appreciated.

I would like to buy a cheap worn out 5.3 truck motor, for instance, get it into my 914 Porsche and all sorted out, painted, etc. then upgrade the engine. But this will take a while, and I don't want to invest in a good motor just to sit for a couple of years.

externally, the dimensions are the same. the gen IV motors relocated the knock sensors and the cam sensor.
