    Drivers side headlight stuck open

First off, hello to everyone. Just registered earlier today and havent posted yet. Well actually i did, but my post did not appear after posting from the android app, so sorry if it eventually shows up (poor reception on my part).

Anyways, I got a 98 trans am 3 days ago with 38475 miles. Runs like a dream. I drove to work tonight and after about 30 minutes of freeway driving, tried to turn my headlights off. The passenger side goes down fine but the drivers side is stuck open. I tried gently pushing it and cycling the lights on and off a few times, still stuck open. No jackhammer noise or any grinding. I did a search on the forum and most people have a bad gear. I am at a loss. Any help or comments will greatly be appreciated.

OK, so I got home and messed with the lights. Heres what i got so far. Pulled the fuses, both are good, swapped them around and nothing different. Pulled the passenger side headlight fuse which is operational leaving the stuck drivers side fuse in. The motor clunks. Tried to manually lower but can only twist approximately 15 times before its tight and nothing happens. When I turn the lights on and off again, the manual knob resets and i can twist 15 times again. everything looks in order and nothing seems to be binding. what gives? I cant seem to find a solution on the boards. Could it be a stripped gear? would that cause it to bind and stick... no jackhammer noise, just a couple clunks.

Sounds like the motor to me.
There are a lot of postings on this issue.
When you replace the motor, go ahead and replace the plastic gears in the drive mechanism with the brass or hard anodized aluminum ones.
You'll be that much farther ahead in the long run.
After that, there are the window motors to deal with but that's another story......
    A 98 with only 38k on it?
    That is incredible.

Thanks for the reply, guess I'm buying a new motor. Will take your advise and roll with it. I'll post my results when I'm done. Thanks again.

Where's the cheapest place to get a motor?

Watch out on that one as some prices are for rebuilt units and some are for brand new units.

Give this a read over: Headlight Solution (Please Sticky)

And I think your thread should be located in the 'General help" section. you'll probably get more looks that way.

Update guys, thanks for all your help. I did this a couple days ago.

I pulled the motor... No stripped gears. It was gunked with grease and one small flake of white plastic... Unknown from where on the gear... All teeth are fine. Put it all back together (twice because I put the motor bolts on backwards and the hinge wrong, ooops) and it works perfect. All wires were connected so I'm assuming it just got stuck.

hmm...yep i guess something was stuck, or bad electrical contact maybe. glad you got it fixed..

i hate these flipup lights, ..i just leave mine up, that way, don't have to worry about an acutator problem suddenly happening in inclement weather or at night...

When you repack them, use waterproof marine grease.
If you open it up, you really should replace the gear.
This is one task that no one likes and wants to do.
I did mine with the hardened aluminum gearing and marine grease.
That and the torque brace so that I never have to do this again... LOL
