    Question Cold Air Questions.

So, I've been trying to find info on CAIs. I have read and heard if you have a ram air hood and/or a high flow lid, a CAI may cause a low pressure area right after or before the air filter. Also, it may cause unwanted turbulence and mess up the smooth flow of air.

Has anyone else heard anything like this, agree or disagree?

I don't think either OEM-style GM CAI/Ram Air hoods actually pressurize the airbox too much, if any at all. They don't seal to the airbox completely either. I'm sure a debaffled WS6 hood, completely sealed to the airbox does a better job than the SS hood (since the SS hood intake tracks snake from the top-rear of the hood to the lower-front of the hood before being introduced toward the airbox opening.

IMHO, I'd consider a Volant set-up because, it would seem to me, that the Volant would pick-up cooler air than a SSRA would (since it picks air up from right off the pavement.) I'm probably way off because there is documentation says so in favor of the SSRA while I don't recall seeing anything for the Volant.

My plan is to run either a Suncoast Ram Air hood or an SLP Ultra Z hood with the older-style WS6 air cleaner. The airbox is sealed to the hood, and in scoops on the hood are right above the air box. That set-up just plain makes sense in my crazy brain.

I'm not all that sure about the low pressure thing, but here's a pic of my volant. I need to clean the filters... I really like the setup, and it "seals" to the airbox.

I see, so that takes care of one question. What about turbulence? Will air coming from different directions disrupt flow? I guess it wouldn't really make that much of an impact if any. After all, it's just more air. Right?

I was just reading volant's site and it really doesn't go too much into detail, but they do state something about the bends allowing smooth airflow... I think you might get some turbulance at idle, but when you hit the gas you can really hear the suction. I'm pretty sure under throttle it elimintates any low pressure area, but who the hell am I to say haha.
